This New York financier and Democratic politician served his state as lieutenant governor (1929-32) and governor (1933-42), later as senator (1949-57). Meaty TLS, 1p, 8" X 10½", Washington, DC, 18 May 1950. Addressed to Arnold F. Gates (1914-93, noted Lincoln/Civil War scholar). Near fine. Faint original folds. On "United States Senate" letterhead, Lehman replies to a constituent who had enquired about obtaining a souvenir from the complete gutting of the interior of the White House undertaken between 1948 and 1952, leaving only the exterior walls intact. Writes Lehman, ".you request some article which has been removed from the White House. I have been informed by the Executive Director of the Commission on Renovation of the Executive Mansion that it is not permissable. to comply with your request at the present time." He goes on and on, concluding, "a tremendous amount of requests for material from the White House has been received. Until the final determination has been made it is not possible to make any commitments in this regard." Signed in full in black ink at the close. Accompanied by an original glossy 8½" X 6½" news agency photograph. Near fine. Printed text neatly affixed to verso dates the image 23 February 1947, titles it "General Eisenhower Launches Drive for $170,000,000" and describes the scene: "Before more than 450 Jewish leaders today (Sunday) at the Shoreham Hotel, General of the Army Dwight D. Eisenhower, U.S. Army Chief of Staff, called on American people to give generous support to the record $170,000,000 United Jewish Appeal for the relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction of Europe's 1,500,000 homeless, destitute Jewish survivor's [sic]. Left to right -- Henry Morgenthau Jr. former Secretary of the Treasury, and general chairman of the drive, and General Dwight D. Eisenhower, with former governor of New York state, Herbert H. Lehman." Interesting letter and most unusual photograph.…
