(some col.), 1 col. map ; 21 cm. #090325R/241025/240626The rapid development of the central wheatbelt for agriculture over the past century has produced a productive farming landscape, but one which is increasingly subject to degradation. Erosion, salinization, declining soil structure, waterlogging and acidification are all symptoms of this degradation and causes of lost agricultural production. In addition, most of the native vegetation and many of the native animals have disappeared, and the natural heritage of the area resides in small scattered patches that together make up only seven per cent of the wheatbelt region. Many farmers now recognize that replanting trees and shrubs is an effective means of reversing many of the current trends towards land degradation. However, advice on how to go about revegetation, where to plant and which species to use has been hard to obtain. This guide is an attempt to redress this by providing lists of local species grouped according to soil types. It also provides a summary of current knowledge of revegetation methods. It has been put together using information from many sources including farmers, foresters, botanists and ecologists. It has been developed as a direct result of a workshop organized by CSIRO Division Plants for soil conservation -- Western Australia. Soil degradation -- Control -- Western Australia. Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This book critically examines the idea that the sustainability of agriculture could be improved by mimicking the structure and processes occurring in natural ecosystems. Researchers from around the world present comparative studies of multi-species farming systems, natural ecosystems and conventional agriculture. Case studies from Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, and North and South America examine the implications of increasing the complexity of farming systems on water and nutrient cycling, productivity and resilience. Theoretical issues discussed include the role of biodiversity in agriculture, the trade-off between perenniality and productivity, the choice to integrate or segregate production and conservation in an agricultural landscape, and the social and economic challenges to adopting complex farming systems. One section is devoted to the application of this concept in southern Australia, where 15 million hectares of land are expected to be affected by salinity by the middle of the next century unless there is a significant change in agricultural practice.
