Gr.-Oktav. Insgesamt wohlerhaltenes Exemplar. [a.d.R. Bibliotheek van Middelnederlandsche Letterkunde]. - "Jan or Johan or Jehan Yperman (c. 1260 - c. 1331) was a Flemish surgeon and the first medical writer in Dutch.[1] Yperman may have studied in Paris under Lanfranco da Milano, since he often mentions him in his writings." - Die Tafeln mit Wiedergaben der in den betreffenden Codices abgebildeten chirurgischen Instrumente. - PROVENANCE: The book offered comes from the library of the world-famous Karl-Sudhoff-Institute for the History of Medicine (and Sciences) of the Leipzig University, which was dispersed by sale by the end of 2018. The institute was the first of its kind in the world when it was founded in 1906 and through its existence it gained much considerable relevance for the international emergence of a modern history of science and the source-based cultural studies. The institute was overseen by Karl Sudhoff, the most important historian of medicine of the 20th century, as was the annexed library that contained a high number of volumes sent (and sometimes even dedicated) to him personally. After Sudhoff's death in 1938 the institute was renamed to Karl-Sudhoff-Institut in honour of his achievements. All books from this library offered by us (about 2.500) were properly withdrawn from the Leipzig University Libraries holdings and bear corresponding marks (such as handwritten signatures on spines, stamps on titlepages or fly leaves). In general these were added to the volumes in a very careful manner and do not or only to a very small or neglectable degree affect the aesthetical appearance of the books. - [a.d.R. Haarlem [1906]. Wrappers. 81 pp. Omslagtitel: Gerard van Swieten als censor. Texts in French and Latin. Pages uncut. l Gerard van Swieten (1700 - 1772) was a Dutch physician who from 1745 was the personal physician of the Holy Roman Empress Maria Theresa and transformed the Austrian health service and medical university education. Beside his medical activities, Gerard van Swieten was also active as a reformer. Especially the censorship was organised in a different way under his direction. He drove out the Jesuits that were in charge of the censorship before and carried out a centralisation of the censorship that was only partly successful. He also tried to use scientific and rational aspects for the judgement of literature. Especially important is his part in the fight against superstition during the enlightenment, particularly in the case of the vampires.
