In den WarenkorbFirst edition, handsomely presented, of this 70th birthday festschrift for the great American conductor, composer, performer, and educator, enthusiastically inscribed to his lifelong friend, the less popularly revered but no less talented composer-performer Lukas Foss on the half-title, "Dear Lukie, I do love you! Lenny, 88". This is an exceptional musical association copy. Bernstein met Foss when they both joined the Curtis Institute of Music in 1939, Bernstein having graduated from Harvard, the German-born Foss a 16 year old recently arrived from Paris. Both subsequently studied at the Berkshire Music Center, later Tanglewood, the summer school associated with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the work of which is a theme running through the present volume. Theirs was a true meeting of musical minds; the almost excessively brilliant and brash Bernstein considered Foss "an authentic genius", Foss self-described as "a terribly arrogant bastard", confessing that Bernstein was like his older brother and "the only friend I never argued with". George Predota, "An Authentic Genius", Interlude, 7 August 2022; Foss interviewed in "Leonard Bernstein: Reaching for the Note", PBS American Masters Octavo. Portrait frontispiece and numerous illustrations to the text, the majority full-page. Original dark yellowish green cloth, lettered in gilt on the spine, publisher's device in blind on the front board and repeated in matching green on the strong yellowish green endpapers. With the matching cloth slipcase as issued, and housed in bespoke matching book-style slipcase with chemise, black morocco label to the spine. The slipcase just a touch rubbed, else near fine.
