In den WarenkorbBoth items neatly tipped-in onto a leaf from an album. Both in good condition, on lightly-aged paper. The letter is 1p., 8vo. Beveridge begins by explaining that he is late answering Gallup's letter because he has been 'working so hard for many months to finish the last two volumes of my "Life of John Marshall" that I have been forced to neglect all correspondence'. He is enclosing 'the quotation, autographed as requested'. He is glad Gallup liked the article, and 'flattered by your too partial words'. He ends: 'Thinking that you might be interested, I am sending you, under separate cover, copy of an address which I delivered at the annual meeting of the Pennsylvania Bar Association on the same subject.' (not present). The transcript is 1p., 8vo, and consists of twenty-one lines beginning 'The League can be established only by treaty.' Its source is given at the end as 'The North American Review.', with the date '1882' in pencil. Neatly presented, it is signed at the end 'Albert J. Beveridge'. It concludes in stirring fashion: 'The situation of the American nation is unique. Geographically it sits on the throne of the world. Its history is that of the evolution of a distinct, separate, and independent people. Its mission is no less than to create a new face on the earth and to present to mankind the example of that happiness and well being which comes from progressive, self-disciplined liberty.'.…

In den WarenkorbBoth items in good condition, on aged high-acidity paper. The handbill is printed on one side of a piece of 30.5 x 19.5 cm. paper. The meeting is said to have been 'Presided over by Admiral The Lord Beresford, and there is a list of fifteen individuals by whom the resolutions were supported, beginning with 'J. Havelock Wilson, C.B.E., (President of the National Sailors' and Firemen's Union)' and 'Commander HOUGHTON, R.N.R. (Marine Service Associatio - Masters and Officers - Liverpool)'. The reader is urged to join the League in order to 'punish the Germans for their crimes against civilians on land and sea', with six reasons given for doing so, beginning with 'BECAUSE no Government can teach the Huns the same lesson that the people can'. Two resolutions adopted at the formation of the League are also given in small print. The subscription slip is printed in blue, and states that the League has 'for its objects the Boycott of the Germans and German Goods at the termination of hostilities, and in recognition of the heroic services of fthe British Mercantile Seamen rendered to the Empire during the War, and to assist them in their Benevolent Institutions for the aged and infirm'.
