He played a key role in the Nazi seizure of power in 1933 when he appointed Adolf Hitler as Chancellor of Germany.

As a member of the cadet branch of the Royal House of France and a cousin of King Lou…is XVI of France by reason of his descent from their common ancestors Louis XIII and Louis XIV, he had earlier found it necessary to flee France during the period of the French Revolution in order to avoid imprisonment and execution, a fate that actually befell his father Louis Philippe II, Duke of Orléans. He spent 21 years in exile after he left France in 1793. He was proclaimed king in 1830 after his cousin Charles X was forced to abdicate in the wake of the events of the July Revolution of that year. His government, known as the July Monarchy, was dominated by members of a wealthy French elite and numerous former Napoleonic officials. He followed conservative policies, especially under the influence of the French statesman François Guizot during the period 1840-48. He also promoted friendship with Britain and sponsored colonial expansion, notably the conquest of Algeria. His popularity faded as economic conditions in France deteriorated in 1847, and he was forced to abdicate after the outbreak of the French Revolution of 1848. The very rare woodblock print pamphlet written by the freedom fighter of India under British rule, probably distributed clandestinely t…o gather the Khilafat Movement sympathizers against Britain. It's unobtainable in online sources and not registered in institutional holdings, market, and auction records. This pamphlet was written to criticize British colonialism and its attitude against the Khilafat Movement and 17-18 April events, just before the movement was introduced into the district of Malabar on 28 April 1920, by a Resolution at the Malabar District Conference, held at Manjeri. This small pamphlet was seemingly distributed also just before the non-cooperation movement, a political campaign launched on August 1, 1920, by Mahatma Gandhi to have Indians revoke their cooperation from the British government, to persuade them to grant self-governance. Maulana Shawkat Ali was an Indian Muslim leader of the Khilafat Movement that erupted in response to the fall of the Ottoman Empire. He was the elder brother of the renowned political leader Mohammad Ali Jouhar. Shaukat Ali helped his younger brother Mohammad Ali Jauhar to publish the Urdu weekly Hamdard and the English weekly Comrade. In 1915 he published an article that said Turks were right to fight the British. These two weekly magazines played a key role in shaping the political policy of Muslim India back then. In 1919, while jailed for publishing what the British charged as seditious materials and organizing protests, he was elected as the last president of the Khilafat conference. He was re-arrested and imprisoned from 1921 to 1923 for his support of Mahatma Gandhi and the Indian National Congress during the Non-Cooperation Movement (1919-1922). His fans accorded him and his brother the title of Maulana. In March 1922, he was in Rajkot jail and was later released in 1923. Though he is widely known as an advocate of non-violence in the struggle against the British colonialists, he supplied guns to Indian revolutionaries like Sachindra Nath Sanyal. In 1936, Ali became a member of the All India Muslim League and became a close political ally of and campaigner for Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the future founder of Pakistan. He served as a member of the 'Central Assembly' in British India from 1934 to 1938. He traveled all over the Middle East, building support for India's Muslims and the struggle for independence from British rule in India. (Source: Wikipedia). In den Warenkorb'The Last Month' by Wilmott. 13pp., foolscap 8vo. A photocopied typescript on thirteen leaves of paper, stapled together. The first reads '"Big funf" was one of the German Guards - had no roof to his mouth - spoke funnily' and the fourth 'We had a "Union Jack" which was used for burials when P.O.W.'s died.' Wilmott's account com…mences: 'There had been gun fire from the west and the south for the last three days. Friday the 13th April 1945 the usual officials did not come to fetch the men, but a little later than usual the Gaschwyz [sic] column was called, so we assembled and left for work, about 20 of us. There was a lot of activity in the station yard, German military vehicles were coming and going, and a contingent of unarmed Russian fatigue men were on parade.' A typically vivid passage reads: 'In the morning of the 24th April I heard chaps reporting prisoners passing through and our guards not interfering, a lot of Indians were going through without any guards. Chaps with kit got up early because of being cold. I got up after seven and went outside and saw the Indians going through. A column of Russian prisoners appeared with guards and were halted just outside. The German guards were standing about in groups talking to each other, and taking no notice of the prisoners some of whom were already making off. A man got up on a cart and addressed us, he said he couldn't advise us to go, he couldn't advise us to stay, the German commandant had said that if we stayed he would do his best to obtain food for us, there was a horse dying in the next village, and he had the first refusal of it if it expired and we should have it.' The account ends on Wilmott's return: 'At London I bid my comrades of the last 2 years goodbye and got on a train at Paddington. It was a noisy journey, ex P.O.W.'s one side of the compartment, civilians the other, we all talked at once. At Bristol I had to catch a bus home, and suddenly realised I had to pay the fare, it was more than 3 years since I had paid a fare anywhere.'.
