A new book on a family of ammonites by two specialists of the genre! Dactylioceras and their allies are ammonites well known to collectors. They constitute a bushy and complex family that has given rise to numerous works and, often, divergent, even contradictory opinions. However, they had never been studied in their entirety; it is done with this synthesis on the Dactylioceratinae of the Toarcian. In this work, the ammonite collector will find all the elements to determine the 170 species and 22 genera of Dactylioceratidae of the NE European and Mediterranean Provinces. The others will also find their account with regard to the great stratigraphic value of these ammonites. Lyon. D?dale Editions. 245 pp., 44 figs, 46 b/w plates, br. 4.…

The Grammoceratinae subfamily was the subject of a first in-depth study by Gabilly (1976), using material from the Toarcian stratotype region, then a thesis work by Rulleau (1989) on the ammonites of the Lyon region. In addition to their purely regional character, these works were either incomplete, Gabilly having considered only part of the genera attached to the subfamily, or unpublished in the case of Rulleau s thesis. In addition, many subsequent works, either in France or abroad, have provided new data on this group of ammonites and its worldwide distribution. In the NW European domain, the main trunk, represented by the Pseudogrammoceras and derived from the Phymatoceratinae, continues until the extinction of the phyllum, by the Phlyseogrammoceras and the Hudlestonia. From this line, several lateral branches will successively detach: the Grammoceras first, then the Esericeras which give rise to the Pseudolillia and finally the Gruneria. Podagrosites occupy a special place, which raises the problem of their origin. At the species level, new forms have been described, just as we have been able to discuss the probable membership or otherwise of the subfamily of Mediterranean or American species. Lyon. D?dale Editions. 292 pp., num. figs, 66 b/w plates, br. 4.…

In den WarenkorbThe abundance and diversity of ammonites from the Upper Toarcian and Lower Aalenian in numerous deposits in Western Europe have enabled the in-depth study of two subfamilies: the Dumortieriinae and the Leioceratinae. The almost imperceptible transition from one to the other allows them to be grouped in the same family, that of the Graphoceratidae, a family which therefore brings together, alongside the Hammatoceratidae, almost all of the ammonites from the terminal Toarcian (Pseudoradiosa and Aalensis zones) and the Aalenian. This study also attempted to present the numerous species created in each genus, gathered in groups sharing both common morphological characters and the same stratigraphic position. Paleogeographically, it appears that this group of ammonites is mainly confined to the NW European province and much less represented in the Mediterranean province, otherwise on its margins (Hungary, North Africa, etc.). The systematic position of this group, however, remains debated: the genus Tmetoceras is placed according to the authors, either in a subfamily of the Tmetoceratinae, attached to the Graphoceratidae, which is the option retained in this work, or in an independent family of Graphoceratidae which can also include the genus Catulloceras from which the genus Tmetoceras derives, or even the genus Dumortieria. This work completes the series of books already published on the ammonite fauna of the Toarcian and Lower Aalenian. It follows the work on the Hildoceratidae, the Hammatocertidae, the Dactylioceratidae, the Phymatoceratidae, the Grammoceratidae, the Phylloceratidae and the Lytoceratidae. Lyon. D?dale Editions. 302 pp., color & b/w photos, b/w illustrations, paperback 4 [21 x 29.7 cm] [in French].…

In den WarenkorbA palaeontological study project focusing on Bajocian and Aalenian fauna was launched in 2013 at the Grande Palisse quarry in Nanteuil, a commune of the Deux-S?vres department in western France. The richness and diversity of the collected fossils led to the on-site construction of a palaeontological museum dedicated to education and scientific research. This 2-volume set gives a graphic documentation of the site s ammonite fauna, one volume containing 492 pages of text and figures, the other 245 plates with colour photos. The study covered 78 beds spanning a sediment thickness of 18.5 meters. By using the collected ammonites (suborders Ammonitina, Phylloceratina, Lytoceratinae) to establish the geological zonation of the quarry, the site enabled the study of the uppermost Toarcian (4 beds, 102 specimens), the Aalenian (19 beds, 397 specimens), and the Bajocian (55 beds, 777 specimens). This resulted in a collection of 1,304 ammonites distributed across 7 superfamilies (Hammatoceratoidea, Haploceratoidea, Stephanoceratoidea, Perisphinctoidea, Spiroceratoidea, Phylloceratoidea, and Lytoceratoidea), 13 families (Graphoceratidae, Hammatoceratidae, Sonniniidae, Strigoceratidae, Lissoceratidae, Oppelliidae, Otoitidae, Sphaeroceratidae, Stephanoceratidae, Perisphinctidae, Spiroceratidae, Phylloceratidae, and Lytoceratidae), 46 genera, and 203 species and morphotypes. A clear boundary between the uppermost Toarcian and the basal Aalenian provided new data on the coexistence of the final Pleydellia and the earliest Leioceras found together at the base of the Aalenian. The subsequent diversification of Leioceras was observed up to the end of the Bifidatum Zone. The final zones of the Aalenian were also well characterised. The base of the Bajocian was characterised by the presence of residual pockets of ferruginous oolites; the lower part yielded a Graphoceratidae fauna typical of the latest Aalenian, while the upper part contained a fauna typical of the Discites Zone. These were followed by the Ovale and Laeviuscula Zones, marked by the disappearance of the Hammatoceratidae and the strong emergence of the Sonniniidae. The Propinquans Zone proved relatively poor in fossils. The Humphriesianum Zone was poor at its base but very rich subsequently, featuring an explosion of Stephanoceratoidea. The Upper Bajocian saw the appearance of the Leptosphinctinae, Cadomitinae, Garantianinae, and Spiroceratoidea. Associated fauna (predominantly other cephalopods, bivalves, gastropods, crustaceans, brachiopods, rare reptiles and sea urchins, scleractinian corals, fish teeth, foraminifera, ostracods, etc.) was also collected and is currently being evaluated.
