Lors des États généraux de 1614, Jean Savaron (1566-1622), en tant que député au Tiers état d'Auvergne, brilla par son érudition et son éloquence. Porte-parole de son ordre, il attira l'attention sur la souffrance du peuple, demandant pour la soulager une diminution des pensions dont bénéficiaient la noblesse. Il s'opposa également aux théories ultramontaines du clergé en prônant l'absolutisme, et contribua ainsi à poser les bases de la « monarchie de droit divin » qui caractérisera le règne de Louis XIV. La plupart des écrits regroupés dans ce recueil reprennent cet aspect bien connu de son oeuvre. Mais l'on découvre également un curieux opuscule, le Traitté contre les masques (1608), où Savaron qualifie masques et déguisements de diableries, avançant qu'en latin comme en grec, « masque » et « démon » ont une étymologie commune. Le recueil comporte également un texte en défense de l'absolutisme signé par Théophile Dujay, pseudonyme de Jérôme Bignon (1589-1656), et un examen du Traicté de la souveraineté du roy de Savaron signé par Jean Le Coq et généralement attribué à Jean-Paul Le jau. Petits manques au dos et manque à la coiffe inférieure, un manque sur le plat supérieur et un sur celui inférieur, manque à la première garde entrainant la perte du partie d'une liste manuscrite des pièces présentes dans le recueil, très petites mouillures marginales, galeries de vers marginales çà et là entrainant la perte de quelques lettres ou parties de lettres dans quelques manchettes de la Chronologie des Estats généraux, quelques feuillets légèrement brunis.…
