The book's publication was in aid of the church and village hall. The Hertfordshire village was used by Le Carré as the site of 'the Nursery' - a training school for intelligence agents. The dustjacket's rear panel carries quotes from his work pertaining to the village, inviting the reader to identify the book in each case. Other contributors include former KGB agent Mikhail Lyubimov.
