Paperback. Zustand: Good. Bentley Layton's The Gnostic Scriptures is the one indispensable book for the understanding of Gnosis and Gnosticism. No other translations are within light-years of Layton's in eloquence, pathos, and accuracy while no other commentaries match his as an introduction to this perpetually relevant religious stance. Layton is particularly brilliant in his appreciation of Valentinus, the central Gnostic visionary, whose Gospel of Truth is marvelously served in this translation' (Harold Bloom). `This volume, which presents nearly all the relevant texts in a new English translation, is to be warmly welcomed. One particularly valuable feature is that Layton has included translations of all the relevant sections from patristic sources to place alongside the Gnostic texts themselves. As well as translating the texts, Layton has also given extended introductions to the various writings, dealing with different facets of Gnostic studies and placing the texts in their (possible) historical contexts. The result is an extremely useful resource for studying these Gnostic writings' (Kings Theological Review). The book has been read but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact and the cover is intact. Some minor wear to the spine.

Buch Erstausgabe
First edition. Octavo. 2 volumes. xvi, (1), 336; xiv, 281, (1)pp. Indices. Dark forest green cloth lettered in gilt, with publisher's device on front covers. An ex-library set with minimal rubber stamping on title & at bottoms of text blocks, and a library pocket on rear pastedowns. Note: Both of the above volumes are also part of The Coptic Gnostic Library published under the auspices of The Institute for Antiquity and Christianity. And they both include Coptic words and forms borrowed from the Greek and from the Egyptian. The Nag Hammadi Library, a collection of thirteen ancient books (called "codices") containing over fifty texts, was discovered in upper Egypt in 1945. The 13 papyrus books (codices) turned out to contain gospels, apocalypses, prayers, liturgical writings and acts of various apostles, none of which were included in the Bible. It also includes observations and commentaries on topics such as the meaning of existence, the creation of humankind and the nature of salvation. Since their discovery these works have provoked enormous interest amongst scholars and the public alike due to the startling new light they throw on the early Christian movement. The provenance of the Nag Hammadi Codices has been a point of contention among scholars ever since they were discovered. A new book strongly supports the hypothesis that they were manufactured and read by Christian monks in the fourth and fifth centuries. (Google) Contents: v. 1. Gospel according to Thomas, Gospel according to Philip, Hypostasis of the archons, and indexes -- v. 2. On the origin of the world, Expository treatise on the soul, Book of Thomas the Contender (OCLC) Volumes 20 and 21 of the Brill series, "Nag Hammadi Studies." (NHS).

Hardcover. Zustand: near fine. First edition. Octavo. xxxiv, (301), (1)pp. Indices. Text in English with a parallel Coptic/English translation. Dark forest green cloth lettered in gilt, with publisher's device on front cover. An ex-library copy with minimal rubber stamping on title & at bottom of text block, and a library pocket on rear pastedown. (Google) Codex VIII from Nag Hammadi contains two tractates, Zostrianos and The Letter of Peter to Philip . This volume presents a critical edition of those texts, and includes regarding each separate text a transcription with notes, an introduction, and a translation. In addition it includes an introduction to the Codex itself, and several sets of indices. The tractate Zostrianos recounts a heavenly journey of a gnostic mystic who gains and brings back with him the saving gnosis. That gnosis is most closely related to Middle Platonism and the document intends to be part of that tradition. As such it was refuted by Plotinus and his pupil Amelius. Much of the manuscript is poorly preserved. The Letter of Peter to Philip is a gnostic revelatory discourse in letter form with Peter as its hero. The Risen Christ reveals a gnostic view of the universe and of human existence. (Publisher) Contents: Preliminary Material /; John H.
