This work examines in depth the role and potential of mechanical traction - that is, steam or motor-driven traction engines, road locomotives and early automobiles - for military logistics and transport in warfare. The author, Lieutenant-Colonel Layriz, traces the development of traction engines, their early use in war (for example in the Franco-Prussian War, the Russo-Turkish conflict and the Boer War), and explores how mechanical traction may supplement or even replace animal and horse-drawn transport in campaigns. He assesses the conditions under which mechanical traction becomes necessary (e.g., when railways cannot supply the front, or when animal teams are over-burdened) and analyses technical features such as the design of road locomotives, cranes, traction drums, winding gear and the special requirements of military use (rugged terrain, weak bridges, operations in retreat or advance). He also comments on the emerging role of the automobile as a traction engine and the implications of mechanisation for future armies. Lieutenant-Colonel Otfried Layriz was a German artillery officer who took a keen interest in military transport technology around the turn of the century. Little detailed biographical information is readily available, but it is known that he published works such as Die Automobilen für schwere Lasten und ihre Bedeutung für militärische Verwendung (1901) and Altes und Neues aus der Kriegstechnik?Betrachtungen über ihre Verwendung im Feldkrieg (1908). His experience and reflections on mechanical traction reflect the evolving thinking in European armies about mechanisation. R. B. Marston, his translator into English, added footnotes and an appendix covering the use of traction engines in the South African War and the early ?Thousand Mile Trial? of motor cars, thereby broadening Layriz?s German perspective to an Anglo-American readership.…

First and only contemporary English edition, scarce, expanded from the German edition of the same year. Wide-ranging and comprehensively illustrated, it includes footnotes and references in the appendix on the use of traction engines in the Boer War (notably the Fowler machine) and an account of the recent groundbreaking Thousand Mile Trial for automobiles, which proved "such [a] striking success". Many of the world's armies experimented with steam traction engines in the 1870s, using them alongside horses to pull road trains and supply wagons. With a top speed of around ten miles per hour this was still some three times faster than horse-drawn transport. The British Army was at the forefront of their use, particularly in the more intractable parts of the empire where railways had not been laid. The Royal Engineers were experimenting with them in 1857 and by the end of the century they were being pressed into service during the Boer War (at the close of which 46 machines had been sent to South Africa). By the time of the Salisbury Manoeuvres of 1898, Commander-in-Chief Sir Garnet Wolseley found that their efficiency was "clearly proved". This early work on the subject appears to have gone unnoticed by the two great proponents of mechanized warfare, J. F. C. Fuller and Basil Liddell Hart, and remains an overlooked work. Its initial readership would have been relatively small and the rate of attrition seems to have been high: copies that appear on the market are usually ex-library (which this may have been) or rebound. The original German edition of 1900 was published in Berlin under the title Betrachtungen über die Zukunft des mechanischen Zuges für den Transport auf Landstraßen. In the same year Lippincott issued an edition in America and in 1973 David & Charles published a facsimile reprint. Little is known of Layriz, an artillery officer, at this time a lieutenant-colonel in the German army, but he appears to have been at the forefront of German military thinking. He published several works, including, in 1901, a translation of a work by an Italian officer, Pietro Mirandoli, published as Die Automobilen für schwere Lasten und ihre Bedeutung für militärische Verwendung (Heavy-duty vehicles and their importance for military use) and in 1908 Altes und Neues aus der Kriegstechnik Betrachtungen über ihre Verwendung im Feldkrieg (Old and New Military Technology: Reflections on its use in field warfare).
