We believe that the resulting volume will make a significant contribution to a better understanding of the geology of Northeast Russia, and will be a valuable introduction to those who would like to join in exploring the geology of the area. As is clear from the title of this volume, we all owe a debt of gratitude to Leonid Parfenov for his encouragement of our endeavors, his input into the development of many of themes expressed here, and his hospitality. This is all the more remarkable considering it was initiated at a time when international collaboration in Northeast Russia was looked at with great suspicion and visa, permitting and customs problems were common. A glance at Leonid's bibliography will clearly show the range and depth of his involvement in all of the endeavors of this volume.
