In den WarenkorbSee the two men's entries in the Oxford DNB. The subject of the letter would appear to be Page's 'The Principle of the English Poor Laws Illustrated and Defended' (1822). 3pp, 4to. On bifolium. In fair condition, on aged paper. Folded three times. Addressed to 'F. Page Esq.' and signed 'Lansdowne'. Begins: 'I am much obliged by…your letter with the copy of your valuable essay on the state of the Poor. The subject in the present state of all countries is one of the most important that can be offered to the consideration of the publick.' He is indebted to Page for 'the justice you have done to me in the note'. Lansdowne now turns to the situation in Ireland, two decades before the Liberal government of which he formed part would preside over the greatest disaster in Irish history. 'No person can be better aware than you must now be of the difficult questions which arise in the management of an Irish estate but I can truly say that if I have ever erred on that subject it was has not been from want of great & unceasing attention, & the most positive injunctions to the agents have employed to preserve those principles which [appear to be?] best calculated to promote the general prosperity of the country, which it is the real interest of the landlord to consider in preference to any thing'.
