Book Hardcover. Zustand: Good. 1st Edition. Edinburgh and London, Gall & Inglis, 1907. 1st Edition . Good. Alas, this very rare little book has been rudely pulled off the shelf once too often (and just once is too often) and a piece about 8mm deep by 20mm wide is missing from the top of the spine. Also, the cloth is parting at t…he rear joint, but not affecting the strength of the dark blue binding with unembossed gilt titling to spine (not affected) and front cover. The cloth dye has run slightly onto the top of the endpapers, to which is affixed the ownership label of Dr. W.B.Crow, who is William Bernard Crow of Woodford Green, who was heavily into occult or heretical religion and mysticism (forgive me if I've got that summary wrong). viii,234pp, photographic frontispiece. From the contemporary review in "Nature": "This book claims to be a trustworthy text-book for the student of physics, but we cannot recommend it in this respect. Very few of the statements of fact which it contains are correctly made; and the deductions from them are supported by little consistent proof. At least, these are the conclusions to which we have come after a genuine endeavour to understand the meaning of the book. At the present time, when there has been such a rush of new facts, there is abundance of room for a book of a speculative character. The author must not think, therefore, that we speak unfavourably of his work because of its novelty. The true explanation of physical phenomena will sound exceedingly novel, we have no doubt, when it is first put forward. It may be that in the author's mind there is a germ of an idea which deserves developing. But if he wishes this to be recognised it would be well if he were to get some friend to assist him in the process." Alas, poor Alexander; us isolated scientific cranks know just how he will have felt. Did he anticipate "spin"??.
