Publisher's quarter vellum, with gilt titles to spine, blue paper over boards, and gilt titles to upper. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Black ink gift inscription to the fly-leaf dated March 1915, possibly from the translator, but unverified. Light occasional spotting throughout, with some offsetting to endpapers, otherwise internally clean. Moderate toning to spine; just starting to lower joint, but holding firm. First thus, the first edition of this work with these illustrations. This work has been translated from the original French by Dulcie Lawrence Smith. Illustrated by Eileen Lawrence Smith. In the original quarter vellum binding with paper covered boards. With ribbon bookmark present. Held in the original, very scarce slipcase. 'Aucassin et Nicolette' is anonymous and is the unique example of a chantefable, which is a 'sung story'. It therefore is a combination of prose and verse. It was discovered by medievalist Jean-Baptiste de la Curne de Saint-Palaye. In a quarter vellum binding with paper covered boards. Held in the original slipcase.
