Nel 2016 Robbie Lawrence si recò per la prima volta a Linn Gardens, Cove Bay, lato occidentale di Rosneath, nella Scozia occidentale. Questo luogo è caratterizzato da un remoto tratto di costa. I giardini locali erano gestiti da più di cinquant'anni da Jim Taggart, un esperto botanico e giardiniere.  Jim scoprì che la presenza di un clima subtropicale nella regione gli permetteva di coltivare piante e fiori provenienti da tutto il mondo. I suoi sforzi negli anni fecero sì che la tenuta fosse coperta da una trama intricata di felci, bambù, magnolie e rododendri. Man mano che Jim cresceva, suo figlio Jamie si occupava degli aspetti più materiali della manutenzione del giardino, compresi i viaggi all'estero per la ricerca e la raccolta di nuove piante. In uno di questi viaggi, nella regione montuosa settentrionale del Vietnam, Jamie scomparve.
