Hard Cover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: No Dust Jacket. Illustrated by Lawrence Beall Smith (illustrator). First Edition Thus. First Printing. Quarter bound in publisher's black cloth over burgundy boards, gilt lettering on spine. Illustrated with 9 full-page color plates and numerous B&W drawings by Lawrence Beall Smith. The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling, often known simply as Tom Jones, is a comic novel by the English playwright and novelist Henry Fielding (1707-1754). First published on February 28 1749, Tom Jones is among the earliest English prose works describable as a novel. The History Tom Jones is not only generally regarded as Fielding's greatest work, but is one of the first and most influential English novels, and a masterpiece of English literature. Coleridge acknowledged it as having one of the three great plots of all literature. Although a great success, the book drew criticism from many, including Dr. Johnson, for the hero's high-spirited and varied sexual escapades. This is an excellent, unmarked, copy. Spine lightly sunned with some mild rubbing at head and heel of spine, else fine. The original slipcase is moderately shelf-worn. NEAR FINE/VERY GOOD (slipcase). Color and B&W drawings. Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall. xxiii, 721 pp.

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine dj. Illustrated by (dj design) Lawrence Beall Smith (illustrator). First Edition. [nice clean copy, minimal wear to bottom edge, place and date of original purchase (presumably) inked very discreetly on ffep; jacket lightly scuffed on front panel, very slight fading to spine]. The first (and apparently only) novel by a native New Englander (Radcliffe '28), this is "the story of a young woman who found that her security lay not in money, not in social prestige, nor in doctrinaire politics. It lay within herself. But Connie Trumbull's story also describes the larger dilemma of the middle class in these times. At the beginning of her senior year in college, just as she is about to step out on the firm ground of her personal future, Connie's father dies, financially ruined. His death causes her to question the social system of which, she feels, he was a bewildered victim." The novel opens in 1933, and takes place during the Great Depression, so of course one of the men that Connie gets romantically mixed up with is a Communist, who loves her but "is incapable of giving up the security of Communist solidarity to share with her the risks of honesty and unpossessive love.".
