Floral and foliar woodcut head- and tail-pieces. Contemporary calf, gilt spine, on marbled boards. This second edition of the work (first published in 1738, see Barbier) provides many corrections which the author notes in the preface might have put the reader of the first edition in awkward situations. Backgammon, is said to be the 'oldest known recorded game in man's history . In 1743 an Englishman called Edmond Hoyle documented and standardised the rules of the game. Backgammon then became popular in many European countries. "Tric-Trac" in France, "Puff" Germany, mostly followed these rules . These rules remained unchanged till 1931 when in America they were revised to what generally governs the game today'. ('Salar's Backgammon', salnet.demon.co.uk). A well preserved crisp copy, one or two tiny foxing marks. Old inscription inside front cover dated '20 mars 1883'.
