Gilt title to red leather spine. Condition is fine (faint spotting/foxing along top edge of page block.) Interesting copy of an attractive looking book with an invoice to Javier Marias for the book from 2012 from Eric Stevens bookseller. With handwritten note from Marias stating his Visa number and saying 'Dear Mr Stevens sorry about this,Thank you yours JM.' With his Plaze de La Villa address in Madrid. The critic James Wood identified the novel (Tristram Shandy) as a precursor to the "hysterical realism" of authors such as Rushdie and Thomas Pynchon. Novelist Javier Mar'as cites Tristram Shandy as the book that changed his life when he translated it into Spanish at 25, claiming that from it he "learned almost everything about novel writing, and that a novel may contain anything and still be a novel.".…

Covers bumped and worn to extremities with some leather loss at the head of the spine on Volume II. Spines with gilt tooling and morocco title labels. Outer joints are worn and a little weakened, but all still bound. Vol II has marbled endpapers at the front, with all others blank. Small owner's inscription to top edge of rear pastedown of Vol II. Text is generally clean and easily legible with some areas of discoloration and light staining (mostly marginal), but overall a good set of this uncommon 18th Century dual language version of this title.
