Prints only, no sonnets. Folio [34 cm] Illustrated dedication/title page plus 11 mounted woodcut prints [images 5 1/2 x 7 1/2"; on paper 7 3/8 x 9 1/2"] on loose bifolia sheets [13"]. Each with a loose tissue guard. All prints are signed by Isaac Friedlander in pencil in the bottom right corner. The Sonnet number is written in pencil in the bottom left corner. The prints are in a folder with a mounted illustrated dedication page on the front wrap (1 1/2" closed tear to the front folder wrap at the foot of the spine). All contents housed in a black paper chemise portfolio with a paper title label on the front of the portfolio. The portfolio is in very good condition, with light rubbing and edge wear. Short closed tear to top edge. Light stain along top edge of one bifolium. Prints fine. It is commonly agreed upon that the author of the dedication, "T. T." is the publisher Thomas Thorpe, however the identity of the dedicatee W. H. has been the matter of widespread and often bitter dispute, and is considered to be one of the most elusive figures in literary history. With striking images illustrating the following Sonnets by Shakespeare: Sonnet 7 (traces the path of the sun across the sky); Sonnet 12 (the poet realizes that the young man's beauty will be destroyed by Time); Sonnet 27 (the poet laments that the night, which should be a time of rest, is instead a time of continuing labor as, in his imagination he wrestles to reach his beloved); Sonnet 34 (the sun is overtaken by clouds, and the sun/beloved is accused of having betrayed the poet by promising what is not delivered); Sonnet 53 (the poet praises the beloved as not only the essence of beauty, but also as the epitome of constancy; Sonnet 66 (the poet gives examples of the societal wrongs that have driven him to become weary of life and long to die, except that he would thereby desert the beloved); Sonnet 97 (the poet remembers his separation from his beloved as a period as bleak as winter); Sonnet 116 (the poet meditates on what he views as the truest and strongest form of love, that between minds); Sonnet 123 (the poet muses that there is nothing new under the sun); Sonnet 127 (the poet defends his love of a mistress who does not fit the standard conventional definition of beauty); Sonnet 144 (reflects an allegory of a person tempted by a good and a bad angel). Missing Sonnet 106 (?). Eleven powerful images by Isaac Friedlander. Prolific etcher and wood engraver Isaac Friedlander (1890-1968) was born in Mitau, Latvia. Friedlander, a fervent opponent of Czarist rule, was sentenced to death at the age of 16- a fate he managed to narrowly escape. He moved to Italy in 1912, where he befriended Russian artist Maxim Gorky. During this time, he studied etching, drawing, and relief printing at the Academy of Rome. He emigrated to the United States in 1929, eventually settling in New York where he worked as a full-time artist until his death. His work often emphasizes his native Riga, the urban drama of Depression-era New York, and the horror of the Holocaust. Friedlander's works are represented in numerous museums, including the Smithsonian, Bibliotheque Nationale, and the Brooklyn Museum.

Very good. Some wear along original centerfold. Minor print crease near title cartouche. Original platemark visible. Minor spotting and offsetting. Size 20 x 24.5 Inches. This is a fine 1753 map of northern European Russia by Robert de Vaugondy. It covers the northwestern part of Russia from the Gulf of Finland east to the Ural Mountains and from Finland south to Moscow, including modern day Estonia, Latvia and Finland. This extremely detailed map notes important cities, towns, rivers, mountains, roads and a host of additional topographic features. The Ural Mountains are identified here as ' Monts Payas.' A beautifully engraved title cartouche adorns the top left quadrant of the map. Drawn by Robert de Vaugondy in 1753 and published in the 1757 issue of his Atlas Universal . The Atlas Universal was one of the first atlases based upon actual surveys. Therefore, this map is highly accurate (for the period) and has most contemporary town names correct, though historic names are, in many cases, incorrect or omitted. References: Rumsey 3353.022. 1st Edition. Good. Minor soiling. Trimmed; image complete but separated from text. Size 4 x 6.25 Inches. This is the 1550 / 1572 Sebastian Münster woodcut view of Riga, Latvia - the earliest printed image of that city and one of the only glimpses of the city as it was prior to the great fire that destroyed the city in 1547. It represents the standard view of the city for about a century. A Closer Look This woodcut depicts the walled city viewed from the southwest across the Daugava River, also known as the Western Dvina, or the Duna, as here. The cardinal directions are labeled. The spires of Riga's great churches, castle, and city hall are named. The river is busy with ships and boats, reflecting the importance of Riga and the river as a conduit of trade. The city's name is displayed on a banner above the view, flanked by the city's lesser and greater coats of arms. A Glimpse of the Lost Past The woodcut presents us with an image of the city that was lost even as it was published. Münster's text in the 1550 edition translates an explanation: We have drawn here, from the report of Johannes Leporicidae, the face of the city of Riga, such as it was before the terrible conflagration which happened to it last year, when most of the houses around the castle were set on fire, and the fire progressed to the cathedral as well, and all the houses from the episcopal court to the tower called Schalthurn, in which is preserved the gunpowder. Half of the city would then have fallen, if the fire had also destroyed the tower mentioned, which the master of powder asserted was in danger from the smoke. The fire destroyed the 13th-century cathedral pictured in the view (which contained the largest pipe organ ever built.) Keeping A Masterpiece Up-To-Date Münster's Cosmographia was first printed in 1544. It was an ambitious attempt at describing, as thoroughly as possible in a single volume, the whole of creation. Plainly, Münster did not consider the work complete with the first edition, and thereafter, the work was assiduously expanded. The most dramatically changed edition, printed in 1550, included many city views interspersed throughout the work. Most of the woodcut artists, or formschneiders , who produced the images for the book did not sign their work, and so the artist behind this view is lost to us. Münster credited this view, and the historical description accompanying it, to one Johannes Leporicidae - one of Münster's humanist correspondents ( a man very experienced in many things and regions ) whose identity, masked by the Latinization of his name, remains obscure to us. Publication History and Census This woodcut was executed by an anonymous formschneider for inclusion in the 1550 edition of Münster's Cosmographia , and remained in every edition to 1628. This example conforms typographically with the 1572 Latin text edition (all earlier Latin editions appear on page 788, whereas the 1572 was on page 938 as here.) In its many editions, the book is well represented in institutional collections. This image is cataloged separately seventeen times in OCLC and appears on the market from time to time.
