The Sesiidae or clearwing moths are represented worldwide by about 1200 described species. 107 European species are treated in this book. The adults have elongate forewings, variously marked wing transparency and abdomen with yellow, red or white rings or margins. The creamy white larvae are endophagous, developing in roots, stems, trunks and limbs of herbaceous and woody plants. A conspicuous adaptation of clearwing moths in their Batesian mimicry, reflected not only in their characteristic morphology but also in their flight and other manifestations. Stenstrup: Apollo Books, 245 pp., 107 figs, 9 color plates, hardcover gr. 8 [24.5 x 17.5 cm].
