A biographical account of Granville Sharp (1735-1813), a key figure in the British anti-slavery movement which details Sharp's lifelong campaign against slavery, particularly his use of legal arguments to challenge its legitimacy within England. This work focuses on Sharp's efforts as a lay lawyer to secure legal precedents against slavery. This includes his involvement in key court cases, most notably the Somersett case of 1772, where the ruling established that a slave could not be forcibly removed from England against their will. Lascelles covers Sharp's role in the wider abolitionist movement, including his co-founding and chairmanship of the Society for Effecting the Abolition of the Slave Trade in 1787. This book details Sharp's extensive writings, such as his pamphlet A Representation of the Injustice and Dangerous Tendency of Tolerating Slavery (1769), which was the first major anti-slavery work by a British writer. Lascelles also touches upon Sharp's support for the Sierra Leone project, an attempt to resettle some of London's poor Black population in West Africa. The book is a well-written, brief account of Sharp's many interests in philanthropy and reform, with an emphasis on the issue of slavery and his pivotal role in paving the way for the eventual abolition of the slave trade in 1807.…
