This March 1939 issue of the avant-garde magazine "Art et Médecine" is splendidly illustrated throughout with striking photogravures by Brassaï, Gaston Paris*, Pierre Boucher**, Wols***, André de Diénès**** and other key photographers of the period. This issue is entirely devoted to light effects in photography. The photogravures depict Paris and New York by night; statues at the Louvre; a circus horsewoman; parcs and gardens; the home; portraits. All with special light effects. Wrappers slightly foxed and rubbed along edges. Corners bumped, thus slightly affecting pages throughout. Text in French. Wrappers in overall good, interior in very good condition. * Throughout the 1930s, Gaston Paris (1903-1964) was one of the pillars of the weekly magazine "Vu," founded in 1928 by Lucien Vogel. The only salaried photographer, he shared the magazine's pages with Laure Albin-Guillot, Germaine Krull, André Kertész, Martin Munkacsi, Man Ray and Robert Capa. Alongside his reports and portraits of artists and celebrities of the time, he produced strange photographic series inspired by surrealism, work which appeared in "Detective magazine" from the 1930s to the 1950s to illustrate its stories of gangsters and femmes fatales. His archives were purchased by the Agence Roger-Viollet shortly after his death. ** In 1934, Pierre Boucher (1908-2000) founds with René Zuber the Alliance-Photo agency that delivers the first deontology of photography and enhances the importance of photographers' signatures. Multidisciplinary, the French photographer explores the avant-garde aesthetic with surrealist nudes, photograms, collages and solarizations. He also produces more commercial works, illustrating advertisements and books such as Emile Allais' French Skiing Method. *** Wols was the pseudonym of Alfred Otto Wolfgang Schulze (1913-1951), a German painter and photographer predominantly active in France. Piatti foderati in carta marmorizzata coeva. Prima, assai rara, edizione italiana della più importante opera del celebre filosofo francese, Pierre Laromiguière (3 November 1756 12 August 1837). Professore di filosofia all'Università di Tolosa prima professore di Logica all'Ecole Normale di Parigi poi, fu autori di diversi importanti scritti di filosofia politica. Nel 1793 pubblica la sua opera più celebre e significativa "Projet d'éléments de métaphysique" qui tradotta. La sua opera filosofica è fortemente legata agli sviluppi della psicologia. Contrapposto fortemente alla psicologia fisiologica di Cabanis, l'autore elabora una netta distinzione fra i fenomeni psicologici chiaramente riconducibili ad aspetti puramente fisiologici e fenomeni psicologici legati all'anima ed alla sua esistenza. Allievo di Condillac e debitore per gran parte della sua ideologia ad Antoine Destutt de Tracy, attribuì maggiore importanza all '"attenzione" come facoltà psichica. Nell'elaborazione della sua filosofia, portando alle estreme conseguenze la sua visione gnoseologica, Laromiguiere arriva a metter in dubbio l'utilità stessa delle scienze naturali ritenendo le scoperte di questa come semplicemente, non sono altro che reiterazione in altro linguaggio delle stesse verità. Seppur Jouffroy e Hippolyte Taine, lo descrissero come uno dei più importanti pensatori del XIX° secolo, la sua opera rimase a lungo quasi del tutto sconosciuta in Italia. Questa prima edizione italiana si deve all'intuizione di un geniale piccolo editore pavese, Defendente Sacchi, che nella prima metà del XIX° secolo, ebbe l'idea di tradurre alcune opere di metafisica, che avevano avuto grande successo all'estero ma che avevano incontrato un'accoglienza, perlomeno, tiepida in Italia, tanto da non venire nemmeno tradotte nella nostra lingua. Defendente Sacchi fu un editore dalla notevole curiosità culturale, particolarmente interessato agli studi metafisici, tanto da ideare, insieme a Germani Giuseppe e Rolla Luigi, una vera e propria collana filosofica, la "Collezione dei Classici Metafisici" che vide fra i titoli tradotti, varie prime edizioni italiane di Locke, Hume, Malebranche, Condillac e pochi altri. Fino alla pubblicazione della "Critica della Ragione pura", forse la sua opera edita più importante, la collana era composta solo di 26 volumi. Seppur le traduzioni delle opere furono commissionate da Defendente a traduttori tutt'altro che professionali, l'impatto delle edizioni di Sacchi fu notevole tanto ad esempio, che la la sua edizione della Critica Kantiana portò il titolo ad essere inserito, per la prima volta, nell'Indice dei Libri Proibiti, decine anni dopo la prima edizione vera e propria dell'opera. La stampa dell'edizione è fisicamente tirata dal tipografo Pietro Bizzoni, personaggio molto noto, tipografo della Regia Università, e stampatore di testi altamente specializzati in materia medica (a lui ad esempio si deve la prima edizione di una delle opere di Antonio Scarpa) ma anche di critica letteraria e linguistica. La dicitura tipografica i Collettori, si riferisce a Defendente Sacchi, Luigi Rolla e Giuseppe Germani curatori, appunto, della "Collezione dei Classici Metafisici". Opera assai rara.…
