Photograph. Zustand: Good +. Photograph [13 cm x 18 cm] on a plain black card mount [15 cm x 25 cm]. Photgrapher unknown. Written in white ink on the mount at the right margin: "CB-Q Ry. [Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railway] Telegraph Office: Casper - Wyo. 1917." Some overall rubbing and wear, especially to the edges of the mount. The image shows seven office workers (six men and one woman) in business attire posing for the photograph inside their office. Telegraph equipment, desks, typewriters, a radiant heater, and the office's windows letting natural light into the room can be seen. The Casper, WY depot in which this photograph was taken was built in 1916. …

Written in pencil on the reverse: "1908 - Rimrock Ranch - Rathdrum, Ida. - 8 mi [miles] from Coeur d'Alene - Mabel J. - Bertha Magnes - Margaret Judd - Edwin Judd - Percy Judd." The Northern Idaho settlement of "Rathdrum" was originally called "Westwood" but had to change its name in the early 1880s due to there already being a town named Westwood in the region. The image shows a ranch with planted crop lines in the foreground. At least six building structures can be seen beyond. Three women and two men (whose names, presumably, are the names written on the rear side of the mount) are posing for the photograph at a middle distance in the fields.…

Mount is creased and bumped in a few places with a small split and a small loss at bottom right. Photograph is only lightly rubbed, but still unfaded and with nice contrasts. Shows several workers on and around the bridge. Written in contemporary pen on the front of the mount, in the margins: "First Bridge across river above Main Dam at Thompson Falls, Montana. A large format photograph of this historic house located in the Sugar House neighborhood of Salt Lake City, Utah. Frank Arthur Timby (1863-1927) was president of F. A. Timby General Insurance Company. He is buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah.…

Zustand: Very Good. Mounted photograph [12" x 10"] Maroon mount. No backstamp. Photographer not identified. The image is of a Colorado town and its surrounding scenery. There is a lengthy notation in pen, on the reverse, which states: "Near 'Beecher Island' the scene of the last stand of Indians against whites in Colorado. Wray Colorado in 1895. A pioneer town built on ranch property. Republican River used in irrigation of the fertile lands. 160 miles east of Denver." Good, with wear and creasing to the mount, two taped areas on the reverse, and multiple light scratches on the surface of the photograph.…

Photograph. 10 1/2 inches x 13 3/4 inches. There is a discreet 5" closed tear to the surface which has been backed with tape (tear barely visible on the recto). A sharp landscape view of Yosemite with Half Dome at distant right. A nice Hillers image. John Hillers (1840-1882) was working as a teamster in Salt Lake City, where he met John Wesley Powell. The following year, in 1871, he was hired by Powell to be a boatman on his second expedition down the Colorado River and through the Grand Canyon. Over time, he replaced Clements Powell (John's cousin) as the assistant to the photographer (first E. O. Beaman then James Fennemore). Hillers was likable, worked hard, and picked up the art of photography quickly. Soon, he was the main photographer on Powell's trips and would go on to work for B.A.E. for years.…

At one time, Amelia's Palace, also known as the Gardo House, was heralded as one of the finest homes between Chicago and the West Coast. Construction of the home was begun in 1873 by Brigham Young, who recognized a need for a place where he could receive official callers and entertain the dignitaries who traveled great distances to see him.…
