Dionysius Lardner, a Professor of Natural Philosophy and Astronomy at the newly-founded University College London, published 133 volumes in his series The Cabinet Cyclopeadia aimed at the wide dissemination of kn…owledge and skills, particularly scientific. Each volume was written by an expert in the relevant field. This volume on silk, part of the sub-series The Cabinet of Useful Arts, includes a history of silk and the latest production methods, and was written by George Richardson Porter, a statistician at the Board of Trade and later its joint Secretary. He helped to form the Royal Statistical Society and became its Treasurer. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. (i) - (xiv), including a list of 39 Wood Engravings and 7pp of Contents. 339pp including 12pp of notes and an 8pp Index. Rebound with a calf spine with gilt title and date, and marbled boards.
