Lansing, John, Jr. The Delegate from New York or Proceedings of the Federal Convention of 1787 from the Notes of John Lansing, Jr. Edited by Joseph Reese Strayer. Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1939. x, 125 pp. Reprinted 2002, 2018 by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. ISBN-13: 9781584772187; ISBN-10: 1584772182. Hardcover. New. $39.95 * John Lansing, Jr. [1754-1829] attended the Constitutional Convention as a delegate from New York. The notes were apparently intended for his private use, and it appears that he never altered or revised them. His heirs discovered his notes among his papers. Published until 1939, they provide a rich new primary source record for scholars of the Constitutional Convention. These notes are of value not only for their unique perspective on the principals involved, but for the issues regarding the states relationships he documented. Only in Lansing's notes do we find a report of two significant questions regarding states' rights and sovereignty, an explanation of Charles Pinckney's plan for the Senate, an exceptionally careful presentation of Hamilton's speeches on individual and states' rights and an explanation of the final vote on the New Jersey plan.…

John Lansing Jr. (1754-1829) was a prominent American statesman and Founding Father who played a crucial role in the early years of the United States. Born in Albany, New York, Lansing served as a delegate to the Continental Congress from 1785 to 1786, contributing to the drafting of the Articles of Confederation. He later attended the Constitutional Convention in 1787 but ultimately refused to sign the Constitution due to concerns about the centralization of power. Lansing went on to become a leading figure in New York politics, serving as Chancellor of the State of New York from 1801 to 1814. His dedication to preserving individual liberties and limiting government power left a lasting impact on the shaping of American constitutional principles. The author, Alexander James Dallas (1759-1817) was a prominent American lawyer, politician, and naval officer. Notable cases in these volumes include: Georgia v. Brailsford, Glass v. Sloop Betsy, Hylton v. United States, Chisholm v. George, and many more. From the library of Founding Father and Anti-Federalist John Lansing, Jr., this is the first edition of Reports of Cases Ruled and Adjudged in the Courts of Pennsylvania, Before and Since the Revolution. This set by Alexander J. Dallas is the first p (illustrator). Signed.…
