's-Gravenhage, Nederlandsche Maatschappij van Schoone Kunsten, 1842. IV,195,[5] pp. Some wood-engravings in the text & 4 tables. Re-bound in modern hardcover binding (orig. publisher's printed green wrappers mounted on front - and back cover). 8vo. - All pages in the book have a large light water stain; the title page & page 195 have a stamp of the former owner (J.H. Maartens, former director of a Roman Catholic boys' orphanage in Amsterdam, located on the Lauriersgracht).Quite rare nineteenth century work on the former Dutch colony of Suriname. Contains, among other things, various chapters on slavery. In his preface, the author writes, about which little is known, that he had been familiar with the colony for twenty-four years at that time and had spent several years in Europe during that time. With his book he makes an attempt to 'be useful to the country' and gets involved in what was then called the 'Surinaamsche quaestie'. The book is written from the perspective of the European colonial ruler. # Sabin, 38932; Tiele 642; Muller, America, 3058; Suriname-Catalogus UB Amsterdam, 3878.…

With several nice wood-engravings in the text. IV,195,(10) pp. Original edition. - Contributions to the knowledge of Suriname; several chapters dealing with slavery. - (Some foxing).
