Zustand: Very Good. Henry Troth (illustrator). Offering this special edition of "Hymns of the Marshes" by Sydney Lanier. Photo illustrations from nature by Henry Troth. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1907, 1st edition. Decorated deep-green cloth hardcover, with blue and gilt nature design on front and spine, triple gilt borders, gilt top edge, deckle side and bottom, and sepia-tone photogravures throughout (many full page plates). Full-page frontispiece has tissue guard. A collection of regional poetry and photos. Lanier composed these lyrical verses between 1878-1880 while battling tuberculosis; the poems are a spiritual and emotional exploration of the coastal wetlands in Glynn County, Georgia. Overall condition is Very Good. Cover boards are clean and smooth with light bumping and wear. Gilt edges are worn and there is foxing to the side and bottom, although not very visible because of the deckling. There is a blank pocket on the front pastedown, unmarked. Interior pages have faint age toning, else clean, bright and unmarked. Sewn binding remains secure, all pages firmly attached. A handsome copy! Sidney Lanier (1842-1881) was an influential 19th-century American poet, virtuoso musician, and academic. His poetry celebrates the landscapes of the South. Henry Troth (1859-1945) was a prominent American pictorialist photographer, celebrated for his poetic, fine-art landscape and nature photography.
