Though Langrishe, an Irish MP, had supported a number of Catholic relief bills focused on property rights, he spoke against extending the franchise to Catholics in 1785 "because, he felt, the resultant democracy would subvert the minority protestant administration in Ireland" (Oxford Dictionary of National Biography). However, influenced by his friendship with Edmund Burke, he would later introduce a relief bill allowing Catholics to practice law. His parliamentary career ended with the Act of Union in 1800.
