Sir Hercules Langrishe, 1st Baronet, was a long-serving member of the Irish House of Commons representing Knocktopher from 1761 until the Act of Union in 1800. While Langrishe supported early Catholic relief measures regarding land ownership and property rights, he strongly opposed Henry Flood's motion for parliamentary reform and the extension of the political franchise to Irish Catholics in 1785. As noted in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, Langrishe resisted extending voting rights at this time "because, he felt, the resultant democracy would subvert the minority protestant administration in Ireland." Langrishe's stance evolved over the following decade, largely owing to his close personal friendship and correspondence with Edmund Burke. Burke's seminal Letter to Sir Hercules Langrishe (1792) urged Langrishe to reconsider Catholic franchise rights as a necessary bulwark against radical revolution. Influenced by Burke, Langrishe subsequently introduced the landmark Irish Catholic Relief Act of 1792, which permitted Catholics to practice law and intermarry with Protestants.
