Jahrhunderts etwa gleichzeitig mit Paul Ehrlich, jedoch unabhängig von ihm das Konzept eines biologischen Rezeptors ein und gehört damit zu den Begründern der Rezeptor-Theorie der Signalübertragung. Seine Arbeiten betrafen hauptsächlich das autonome Nervensystem und die Funktionsweise von Drüsen. Aus zahlreichen Versuchen mit Herzmuskelgewebe und seiner Beeinflussbarkeit durch Substanzen wie Nicotin und Curare zog er den Schluss, dass diese Verbindungen die Muskelfasern nicht direkt beeinflussen, sondern auf eine "receptive substance" einwirken, die den Effekt an die Muskelfasern weiter vermitteln. - Papierbedingt stark gebräunt.
