First Japanese edition of one of the foundational works of cinematic literature, presenting Thea von Harbou's Metropolis alongside Anita Loos's Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Issued as volume 15 of the prestigious series Sekai taishū bungaku zenshū (World Popular Literature) and translated by Hata Toyokichi, the volume marks the first appearance in Japan of von Harbou's science fiction masterpiece, closely associated with Fritz Lang's monumental silent film of 1927. Lang and von Harbou collaborated on the screenplay for Metropolis, then the most expensive film production in German cinema. Though commercially unsuccessful on release, the film is now regarded as one of the most influential works in the history of cinema, celebrated for its visionary portrayal of a futuristic city, its striking Expressionist architecture and costume design, pioneering use of visual effects, and vast, meticulously choreographed crowd scenes. The Japanese edition is richly illustrated, incorporating contemporary film stills that underscore the close relationship between text and screen. Particularly notable are the two plates following the title page: a rare hand coloured film still—the only coloured image published during the earliest phase of the film's reception—and a reproduction of the opening bars of Gottfried Huppertz's original score, accompanied by three black and white portraits. A further ten full page photographic stills appear throughout the text. The original dust jacket is especially striking, adopting the bold Expressionist design created by Willy Reimann for the first German paperback edition. As an artifact of Japan's early engagement with Western modernism, the volume is of exceptional rarity. Few Japanese publications of the 1920s survive in Western collections, and OCLC records only a handful of institutional copies, including those at Columbia University, the University of Southern California, and the National Diet Library in Tokyo.
