Questions of territory space and identity are critically important in the international geopolitical context as well as central to contemporary research in the social sciences. Processes connected with globalization have reconfigured identities and territories at multiple scales connecting and disconnecting places in complex ways and re enforcing old while producing new forms of segregation and polarization. Global processes meet the complex and locally specific South African and Indian geographies of inequality expressed at national regional and local scale. In the South African case a political imperative to transform the legacies of racial inequality from colonials and apartheid rule underscores the centrality of racial identities. However racial discourse and differentiation embodies and at times masks a complex mix of place based gender class and cultural identities expressed in a multi scalar politics of territory. More than 50 years into independent rule Indian identity politics continues to build to a large extent on caste and the intricate ways in which caste affiliation merges with religious socio economic political and place based identities. In both contexts the politics of identity and territory simultaneously unify and divide. The spaces territories and identities (re) produced in the complex contexts in which the global national regional and local meet lie at the heart of the research from which the papers in this book have been generated. With the support of numerous maps this unique volume retells the spatial history of the Indian public food system initially based on compulsory sales and imports later graduating to agricultural support prices. From a restricted number of only urban beneficiaries in the beginning to its spread to rural areas from an import dependent state to a self sufficient cereal producing state. A system that played its part in the success of the Green Revolution by guaranteeing outlets for farmers which showed the way to an improvement in the calorie intake of the population but seldom that of the nutritional situation and had significant pernicious effects in terms of its ecological consequences. A system that also contained obvious geopolitical dimensions which made the integration of the four corners of the Indian Union possible within the same structure. The author argues that if successive governments did not reduce the PDS's enormous spatial coverage it was partly because of a concept of territorial integration and aggregation developed in equal measure by Hindu nationalism and Nehruvian thought. It engages with both urban and conservation issues and and compares four national parks located in four large cities in the global South: Rio de Janeiro, Cape Town, Mumbai, and Nairobi. Though primarily undertaken as academic research, the project has intensively collaborated with the institutions in charge of these parks. The comparative structure of this volume is also original and unique: each of the chapters incorporates insight from all four sites as far as possible.The term 'naturbanity' expresses the necessity for cities endowed with a national park to integrate it into their functioning. Conversely, such parks must take into account their location in an urban environment, both as a source of heavy pressures on nature and as a nexus of incentives to support their conservation. The principle of non-exclusivity, that is, neither the city nor the park has a right nor even the possibility to negate the other's presence, summarizes the main argument of this book. Naturbanity thus blurs the old 'modern' dichotomy of nature/culture: animals and human beings can often jump the physical and ideological walls separating many parks from the adjacent city.
