In den Warenkorb2pp., 12mo. 36 lines. She begins by accepting an invitation to give a talk to Wiener's 'Society', about which she has 'hears so much'. She is 'honoured to add my name to such a distinguished roll of speakers'. She next explains why she believes radio to be 'infinitely superior to TV'. She next turns to 'Mr. Sieveking's adaptation', which she considers 'very clever, as he had to leave out the descriptions which formed such an important part of the book. He allowed me to see and criticise all his scripts, too. I'm so glad you are liking the result. Isn't the signature-tune pleasing? Something by Dvorak.' She suggests the title 'Writing About the Past' for her talk: 'I have spoken on this before; and as, in addition to four novels set in the past, I hahve published two serious historical studies under my own name, I have some material.'.

In den Warenkorb4to. Spine faded, upper cover slightly faded towards top edge, some faint spotting. From the library of Reynolds Stone (but originally from the library of his uncle Christopher Stone?); pp. 120-2 marked up carefully in pencil, apparently in the author's hand, with numerous deletions, as for a reading. "This book is an example of elaborate collaboration. The text, which has been written by Sieveking, is inseparable from the photographs, which have been designed by Bruguiere. In each section of the book, the photograph and the text are integral parts of each other" (prefatory note). The author developed this in his The Stuff of Radio (1934): "The idea was that where words failed, the abstract photographic design stepped in, and said in shape and tone what could not be said in words. Sentences broke off on one side of the design, and new sentences began on the other side. I went further than this. I made gramophone records to go with certain parts of the book. We only needed Beachcomber's 'slight smell of foxes' to have been complete. But we certainly achieved 'absolute collaboration' in that Bruguière's photographs were not illustrations but part of the text, as were the gramophone records also." Beyond This Point was launched at the Warren Gallery, the modernist images of the San Francisco photographer Francis Bruguière hanging on the walls, Sieveking's readings playing on the gramophone. None of these records now survives, but Sieveking specifies elsewhere, "I also made a gramophone record of part of the book which 'should be heard while looking at the design on page 123'." This coincides with the text here edited in this copy - a taxing section entitled "Suicide". Christopher Stone, sometime London editor of The Gramophone, the magazine founded in 1923 by his brother-in-law Compton Mackenzie, is credited with being Britain's first disc-jockey. Sieveking started at the BBC in 1925, Stone in 1927: could the latter have overseen the making of Sieveking's record? Sieveking, a passionate experimentalist, who claimed to have mounted the first television play, Pirandello's The Man with the Flower in his Mouth, in 1930, continued working for the BBC until 1956. Beyond This Point is dedicated to "The Lovely Natalie" - Natalie Denny, whom Sieveking married on 24 August 1929.
