Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'Long Lance' is a compelling and immersive narrative that offers a firsthand account of the life and traditions of the Blackfoot people during the final years of their independence on the Great Plains. This work serves as both a personal memoir and a detailed cultural study, capturing the essence of a world transitioning under the pressure of westward expansion. The book details the rigorous upbringing of a young warrior, from the early lessons of childhood to the intense rites of passage that define tribal leadership. Readers are treated to vivid descriptions of buffalo hunts, sun dances, and the intricate social structures that governed Indigenous life. Through powerful storytelling, 'Long Lance' explores themes of bravery, spiritual connection to the land, and the enduring strength of heritage. It provides an invaluable perspective on the customs, languages, and philosophies of the Plains Indians, making it a significant contribution to the literature of Indigenous North America and a vital record of a vanishing way of life. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Dust Jacket Included. First cheap edition, second printing. First published by Faber & Gwyer in 1928. Small 8vo. Foreword by Irvin S. Cobb. Price of 3/6 intact in lower right corner of front inside flap, that corner is trimmed, presumably to remove the 7/6 price of the full-priced edition, Attractive binding of blue cloth with red stamping, dust jacket spine little frayed at top of spine panel. Photographic plates. Colorful dust jacket entirely different from that of the 1956 Faber reprint. The Blackfoot lived in the United States and Canada, and much of the book concerns the pressures they came under from the Canadian government. The close of the book is a description of the manhunt of Almighty Voice. Chief Buffalo Child Long Lance was actually an African-American, born Sylvester Clark Long in North Carolina in 1890. In early life he assumed a Native American identity, passing himself off as half-Cherokee. On settling in Canada, he began a journalistic career. As a journalist in Alberta and Manitoba, Blackfoot territory, he became well acquainted with the Blackfoot and Cree and repressive Canadian policy toward First Nation people, finally assuming a fraudulent Blackfoot identity. He achieved celebrity status under this false identity with the publication of this book.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. 2nd Edition. Irwin Cobb, forward; Norman Mommens, illustrations. An investigation revealed that his father had not been a Blackfoot chief, but a school janitor in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Some neighbors from his home town testified that they thought his background may have included African ancestry, which meant by southern racial standards, he was black. Although the studio did not publicize its investigation, the accusations led many of his socialite acquaintances to abandon Long. Author Irvin S. Cobb, a native of Kentucky active in New York, is said to have lamented, "We're so ashamed! We entertained a nigger!".
