Sewn as issued, pictorial wrappers. Very fine. Milano, Magnum, 1994. 8vo. 24 x 25,5 cms. 128 pp. Richly illustrated with beautiful colour photographs. With glossary, index and bibliography. Text bilingual in English and Italian. With sections on myths and symbols, the history of walking sticks, and the different materials used (ivory, gold and silver, wood). - - - (Jacket:) "Useful and decorative at the same time, walking sticks have developed alongside society from 1700 up until the first half of this century and have always been charaterized by the equal Importance given to their functional aspect and to their value as a form of artistic expression. Once they stopped being used everyday, the decorative and functional aspects of canes meant that they could develop a second life thanks to the interest of both collectors and historians. We have organized this book not so much chronologically, but rather according to their individual shapes and finishes, and the various materials used in their manufacture: from wood to ivory, to precious metals, amber, crystal, and porcelain. We have also dedicated a chapter to gadget sticks of all types: an amazing repertoire of original, as well useful inventions. - - - (Itinerari d'immagini.).…
