Paper labels chipped. Foxing and offsetting to the map with a repaired stub-tear. An altogether clean copy, with scattered mild foxing. François André Michaux (1770-1855) was a French botanist, explorer, and writer best known for his three-volume work North American Sylva. In 1785, the 15-year-old François accompanied his father André, already an accomplished pioneer of botanical exploration in North America, to the United States. There François oversaw a nursery that his father had established near Charleston and traveled on several expeditions before returning to France to study medicine. Upon returning to the United States, Michaux continued working for his father, who had been appointed botaniste du Roi to Louis XVI in 1785. By 1802, Michaux left Philadelphia to embark on a three-and-a-half-month trip through Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee and finally Charleston. The fruits of this expedition were first published in Paris in 1804 and relate Michaux's travels west of the Allegheny (Allegany in the title) Mountains. The book was accompanied by a large and detailed map that covers the East Coast, Southeast, and Midwest. The following year, it was translated into English by Lambert. Michaux vividly recounts his 1,800-mile journey and includes botanical discoveries, observations on wildlife, commerce, viticulture, and agricultural developments. The folding map is of particular interest and shows the Eastern seaboard to the Mississippi River and includes a note identifying the northern boundary of North Carolina extending as far as the South Sea by the Charter of Charles II. First published in Paris in 1804, Michaux's classic narrative relates his travels west of the Allegheny Mountains. The author is most famous as a botanist and author of North American Sylva. His 1800-mile journey began when he, in the company of Jean Chaptal, sailed for America and arrived at Charleston, South Carolina, October 9, 1801. He had been instructed to close down a nursery founded by his father, Andrew Michaux, at Charleston for economic reasons, and he sent back to France the seedlings he thought worthy of cultivation. In the spring of 1802 he began travels in other parts of the United States before returning to France at the end of 1803 and organizing the shipments of plants and seeds he sent back. In this travelogue, Michaux comments on the various botanical specimens he observes, as well as wildlife, commerce, viticulture in Kentucky, Cherokees in Tennessee, and much more.
