Charles Lamb (1775-1834) was a famous English essayist, possibly best remembered today for hi…s Tales From Shakespeare written with his sister, Mary (1764-1847). This edition of their collected works contains (1) all that has been recovered hitherto of their literary prose, (2) the plays, dramatic fragments, prologues, and epilogues by Charles - saving a few relatively unimportant pieces excluded on the score of copyright - (3) the body of his and Mary's verse. There is also an Editor's Preface, bibliographical list, and account of the growth of the body of collected works. The books are uniformly bound in the original red cloth covered boards with gold titling and blind-stamped designs on the spines and front board and a circular blind-stamped design on the rear boards. The cases of the books are in very good condition with some shelf wear to the boards and fading to the spines. The spine ends are bumped with a little damage to the cloth at the top of the spines and bottom of the spine of volume 2. The contents are tight and clean with no inscription. PLEASE NOTE: This is a heavyish set and extra postage may be required for delivery outside the UK.

Charles Lamb (1775-1834) was an English essayist, poet, and antiquarian, best known for his Essays of Elia…and for the children's book Tales from Shakespeare, co-authored with his sister, Mary Lamb (1764-1847). He was a friend of many literary luminaries such as Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Robert Southey, William Wordsworth, and William Hazlitt, and was at the centre of a major literary circle in England. These two volumes contain 588 letters written between 1796 to 1834. They are the first two volumes of a twelve volume edition of the works of Charles Lamb, edited and with a preface by William Macdonald. The books are uniformly bound in the original tan cloth covered boards with a blue cloth spine and gold titling and decoration on the spines. The cases of the books are in very good condition with light shelf wear on the boards and a small scrape in the cloth near the top corner of the rear board on volume 1. The contents are tight and clean with browning to the endpapers. There is no inscription.
