"Heute gilt Philip Lamantia (1927-2005) im angloamerikanischen Sprachraum als bewusstseinserweiternder Surrealist und visionärer Ekstatiker der modernen amerikanischen Lyrik. Hierzulande ist sein Name allerdings wenig bekannt. Ein halbes Jahrhundert nach Arthur Rimbaud nimmt Philip Lamantia den Faden der europäischen Avantgarden an der Westküste der Vereinigten Staaten der 1940er Jahre wieder auf. Sein vierter Gedichtband "Destroyed Works" (1962) schlägt eine wilde, exzessiv-subjektive Sprache an. Es ist ein Buch, das zwischen Christentum, fernöstlichen und indianischen Mythen oszilliert und dabei immer einem Gott auf der Spur ist, der nur im Rausch erfahrbar wird. Hier schreibt einer wie andere schießen: auf die Zwölf. Seine Gedichte greifen explizit nach den Sternen. Allen Ginsberg betrachtete ihn zeitweise als seinen Lehrer und Michael McClure sagte über ihn, Lamantia habe den europäischen Surrealismus nach Hause geholt. PHILIP NUNZIO LAMANTIA wurde am 23. Oktober 1927 als einziges Kind sizilianischer Einwanderer in San Francisco geboren. Schon in der Grundschule schrieb er erste Gedichte. Im Alter von 16 Jahren begann er sich für den Surrealismus zu interessieren, nachdem er die Werke von Joan Miró und Salvador Dali im Kunstmuseum von San Francisco gesehen hatte. Er brach die High School ab und zog nach New York City, wo er schließlich Assistenzredakteur der Zeitschrift View wurde. In New York lernte Lamantia André Breton und Max Ernst kennen und veröffentlichte seinen ersten Gedichtband Erotic Poems (1946), bevor er 20 war. In den folgenden Jahren reiste er nach Mexiko, Marokko, Frankreich, durch die USA und lebte eine Zeitlang in Spanien. Während seiner US-Reisen in den 1950er Jahren nahm er bei den Washoe-Indianern in Nevada an deren Peyote-Ritualen teil, die oft seine Gedichte inspirierten. Nach seiner Rückkehr im Herbst 1955 las er zusammen mit Allen Ginsberg, Michael McClure, Gary Snyder und Philip Whalen bei der legendären Lesung in der Six Gallery in San Francisco. 1959 erschienen seine nächsten beiden Gedichtbände Ekstasis und Narcotica in David Haselwoods Auerhahn Press, ebenso wie der Band Destroyed Works (1962). In seinen späteren Jahren kehrte er zum Katholizismus seiner Jugend zurück und schrieb Gedichte, die seinen wiederentdeckten Glauben widerspiegelten.
