A very scarce work in a quarter calf binding. Inscribed by the author to the half title page, to Lady Stuart of Rothsay, the English Ambassador to the Court of France. Thomas Arthur, Comte de Lally, Baron de Tollendal (1702-1766) was a French general. During the Seven Years' War, he commanded French forces in India. He was beheaded for his alleged failures in India, but later publicly exonerated by Louis XVI. This work is a play written by him, for family entertainment, to be acted by three children for their mother. In a quarter calf binding. Externally, somewhat rubbed to the spine, with some shelf wear to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with a scattering of spots to the first and last few pages, and a faint tidemark to the first several pages. Very Good. Accusé de trahison et de concussion il fit valoir, pour sa défense, la faiblesse des moyens dont il disposait et l'abandon de la flotte. Il se constituera prisonnier, sera condamné à mort à la suite d'un procès inique et conduit au supplice. Il sera réhabilité par le Parlement de Paris en 1778. in-4°.…

A contemporary account of the French campaigns in India during the Seven Years' War in which, Lally (1702-66), a French general of Irish descent, commanded the French Forces. Forced to surrender to Eyre Coote after the siege of Pondicherry (1761), French control of India was ended. Accused of treason, Lally was executed in France in 1766. An interesting association copy with the bookplate of British actress and Duchess of St. Albans, Harriot Beauclerk (1777-1837).…

Édition originale des deux premières parties de la défense de Lally-Tollendal publiées en 1766, l'année de sa condamnation. Une troisième partie fut publiée séparément : « Avertissement. L?intérêt sensible qu?a le comte de Lally d?instruire ses juges et le public, l?engage à distribuer les deux premières parties de son mémoire avec les pièces justificatives, en attendant que l?impression de la troisième et dernière partie qui contiendra la discussion des charges, soit entièrement achevée. Elle sera pareillement et incessamment distribuée : il se flatte qu?elle détruira sans ressource les imputations calomnieuses multipliées contre lui ».Général français d'origine irlandaise, le comte de Lally, dit Lally-Tollendal (1702-1766) se distingua dans la guerre de succession de Pologne et d'Autriche. Il fut envoyé en Inde à la tête d'un important corps expéditionnaire. Autoritaire, mal conseillé, il s'aliéna les indigènes et ses propres officiers. Son échec devant Madras (1758) fut suivi de sa reddition à Pondichéry ; abandonné par la flotte française, il fut affaibli par les désertions qui se multipliaient dans une petite armée en proie aux séditions. Transféré à Madras, puis à Londres, où il obtint la liberté sur parole, il vint à Versailles pour se justifier et confondre ses calomniateurs ; il se constitua prisonnier à la Bastille. Après deux ans de procédure clandestines et de débats orageux entre ses juges, le malheureux Lally fut déclaré par le parlement coupable d'avoir trahi les intérêts du roi et condamné à la peine capitale. Quelques années après, Voltaire commençait à faire campagne pour sa réhabilitation, et son fils l'obtint de Louis XVI en 1778. Imprimé en regard du titre, l'avertissement est suivi d?une note manuscrite à l?encre du temps, rédigée une quinzaine d'années plus tard : L?arrêt du Parlement qui a condamné M. de Lally en 1767 (1766 ndlr) à avoir la tête tranchée fut cassé comme ayant été prononcé par des juges incompétents et renvoyé devant le Parlement de Rouen par le Conseil du Roi ; cet édit de cassation est arrivé 11 ans après la mort du Comte. Après la révision du procès et des preuves, le Parlement de Rouen par son arrêt de 1781 n?a pas rétabli la mémoire du comte. Quelques rousseurs, cerne clair marginal au tome 2, coins et caisson de tête du tome 1 abîmés avec manque de peau.…
