Kane's expedition was the second backed by Henry Grinnell, a New York merchant, to search for Franklin. Kane hoped to find him -and probably the long-sought dreamed-of open polar sea route to the North Pole and to China. Kane failed in his purposes, but produced a memorable, gritty, survival account.
