335 pages. Hardcover with a dust jacket. Well illustrated. An in-depth history of the small arms made by the Sterling Company of Dagenham, Essex, England, from 1940 until Sterling was purchased by British Aerospace in 1989 and closed. The Lanchester and the Patchett Machine Carbines were both developed at Sterling Engineering Co Ltd. during World War II. With the appearance of the earliest Patchett prototypes the militry began testing them in ever more rigorous trials, wherein the Patchett kept proving its merits. This led to limited UK adoption of the MKII Patchett as the L2A1 in 1953, and the 'first Sterling', the MkII, adopted as the general issue 'Gun, Sub-Machine, L2A3' in September, 1955. Manufactured briefly but intensively by ROF Fazakerley (1955-1959) and by Sterling for over 30 years, nearly 1,600,000 were made. Unlike wraparound bolt designs like the UZI, the Sterling was capable of being truly silenced with standard 9mm ball ammunition (as opposed to being merely supressed). The excellent silenced Sterling-Patchett Mk5, adopted as the UK L34A1, is the only Sterling remaining in British Service. All prototypes, military Marks, commercial and licensed production models of the Sterling are described, including the Canadian C1 SMG and the Indian 1A Carbine. Contains notes on manufacturing methods and procedures as used at Sterling, ROF Fazakerley, Canadian Arsenals Limited and the Indian Small Arms Factory, Kanpur (Cawnpore), plus extensive notes on inter-model interchangeability, serial number ranges, quantities produced, client-country purchases of the various Sterling Marks, and accessories. An excellent and very comprehensive reference book. The top front corners of the covers were bumped in shipping, and the top right corners of the first three pages are slightly creased, otherwise this is a like new, unread copy.

Erstausgabe
370 pages. Over 350 illustrations. Hardcover with a dust jacket. The Sten was born of sheer necessity in the bleak, dark days after Dunkirk, when Britain, initially with no machine carbines of any sort in her armoury, stood alone against a powerful, implacable foe, and an invasion by Hitler's Wehrmacht was thought by all to be imminent. Substantial quantities of Thompson submachine guns were ordered from America in early 1940, but they were expensive. The idea for the Sten first came to Harold Turpn at the Royal Small Arms Factory (RSAF) Enfield, as he was working on War Office orders to reverse-engineer a captured German MP28II Schmeisser machine pistol into a weapon for the Royal Navy. Realising that the Lanchester was far too expensive and complex to be made in the quantities required with the critical time-frame that then existed, Turpin sketched out a simple, cheap trigger mechanism. Harold Turpin's proposal was "to produce five stens for the price of one Lanchester, and fifteen for one Thompson". This proved to be the impetus for the entire programme and by the end of 1941 the Sten had armed over 500,000 men. Over four million Stens were eventually produced, in Britain in a total of five service Marks and two silenced versions; plus several interesting experimentals; at six different (private and Government) manufactories and assembly plants. The Book includes clear photgraphs of all models and markings; manufacturers' codes; identification of all parts types; how the Sten works; Sten myths exploded; repairs; accessories and ancillaries; and much, much more! An outstanding reference. Long out of print and Scarce. Both the Book and the Dust Jacket are in Very Fine As New condition. An opportunity to own a wonderful copy of a Scarce title at a reasonable price.
