A bimonthly journal, considered to be one of Laicens' most important publications and the most significant journal of the era along with SIGNALS but esteemed to be of higher literary quality and thought. Striking abstract linocut covers, highly original, in bright colors unique for each issue. As with almost all of the liberal to left wing culture in Latvia, there is a strongly Soviet orientation, and the journal was most likely financed, at the outset, with funds from the USSR. Every issue is illustrated, including some photomontage and graphics. In addition to being a vehicle of contrarian social commentary and promoting open discourse, KREISA FRONTE also was a publishing house which issued poetry and literary books. Linards Laicens (1883-1938) was highly individual, prolific writer in all literary forms, editor and publisher, going against all currents of the day, leftist and of increasingly Marxist-Leninist persuasion. Somewhat the ingenue in matters of Soviet power, he emigrated to the USSR where he became a victim of the purges in Moscow in 1938 along with fellow Latvians. The book refers to the author's brightest creation period characterized by destroying traditional poetic structures and turning to free verse. He experimented with a number of rows, words, and lines of graphic layout, and manipulated placard slogans (obvious impact of Mayakovsky) terrorizing the reader with his fantastic sense of self-righteousness. The Semaphore collection s most important prose poem Par Dzeju (On Poetry) written in 1921 describes the "new" poetry, that should be created by poets deeply involved in political and social life. This idea became crucial not only for other futurists and modernist poets but also for the propagandists of proletarian literature in the Soviet Union. The Semaphore also carries out the vision written by Laicens in 1922 in Dzejas principi (Principles of Poetry) - a poetic manifesto, according to which the poetry should be an active fighter and life engine towards certain targets. The struggle for new content is inconceivable without the struggle for a new form corresponding to it. He urges reducing to the minimum the use of epithets, similes, and metaphors, simplifying poetical language towards colloquial simplicity, but without reducing poetic imagery. Poet and writer Linards Laicens (1883-1938) became the central figure of Latvian avant-garde. A participant in the Revolution of 1905 07, he suffered official repression. He was an important organizer of the legal worker's press and of revolutionary culture in bourgeois Latvia. Since 1920 member of the Latvian Parliament, and leader of the communist party. In 1932 he emigrated to the Soviet Union and engaged himself in the process of developing Soviet Latvian literature. During a wave of repression launched against the Latvian community in Russia in 1938, he was imprisoned and shot. Laicens s writings are imbued with the ideas of revolutionary struggle and hatred for capitalism. A leftist, frankly often a propagandist, he was a poet, novelist and essayist who had a strong sense of visual design. He edited a number of journals journals of major importance (Kreisa fronte, Tribine) and contributed to many more. Due to political ostracism he emigrated to the USSR in 1935 and was executed in 1938 during the Great Purge which singled out Latvian emigres. This work is the first collection of his poems in the new republic of Latvia. Laicens enlisted Niklavs Strunke for book design, cover and five linocuts, all in Strunke's most visually experimental style incorporating futurist and cubist elements. Niklavs Strunke (1894-1966) was one of the leading artists of the Riga avant-garde artists group; a gifted graphic designer, he worked in both conventional and cutting-edge genres.
