LA CAISSE D'ESCOMPTE DE LOUIS XV : LE DESSOUS DES CARTES ! In-f° (372 x 250 mm), 61 pp. dont 7 pp. bl. manuscrites à l'encre noire, veau, dos lisse orné de fleurs de lys, encadrement d'un triple filet sur les plats avec fleurs de lys en écoinçons, roulette sur les coupes, roulette intérieure, tranches dorées (reliure de l'époque). Cet important manuscrit, resté inédit, nous renseigne sur le fonctionnement de la première caisse d'escompte, créée en avril 1767 pour répondre à des difficultés de trésorerie du roi. Il constitue également un précieux indice dans la reconstruction d'une histoire de la banque sous l'Ancien régime qu'Alain Plessis décrit comme constituée de « vues largement impressionnistes ». Créée sous l'impulsion de Jean-Joseph de Laborde, banquier du roi Louis XV, la caisse d'escompte avait pour fonction l'organisation des avances qui finançaient les paiements du trésor royal. C'était donc la « Banque des financiers du roi » selon le projet propagé dès le début du siècle par Samuel Bernard. L'arrêt d'établissement la décrivait comme suit : « Cette Caisse fera à partir du mois d'avril 1767 l'avance de toutes les sommes que S. M. ordonnera, en paiement desquels (!) il sera remis à ladite Caisse la totalité, sans aucune exception, tant des rescriptions qui seront tirées sur le revenant net au Trésor Royal, des Recettes générales des finances et Pays d'État, que des assignations qui seront données sur le prix du Bail des Fermes générales. » Les comptes, divisés par quartiers (trimestres), débutent en janvier 1768 pour se terminer en mars 1769, date à laquelle la caisse fut liquidée. L'ouvrage recense sous forme d'un livre recettes/dépenses l'ensemble des opérations passées au crédit : Extraordinaire des guerres, artillerie, affaires étrangères, Marine, colonies, troupes de la maison du Roy, Trésor royal, Caisses des arrérages, Lignes suisses, gouvernements municipaux, ponts & chaussées, Guerre, fabrication de matières, etc. Et l'ensemble de celles passées au débit pour le compte du roi par ses financiers que sont : de Pange, Geoffroy, Lemaistre, Magon de La Baluë, Radix de Sainte Foix, de St Laurent, Leprêtre et Dupille, de Magnanville, Blondel de Gagny, de St Jullien, de Borde, de Boullongne, Le Ray de Chaumont.
