Unbound. Zustand: Near Fine. A collection of approximately 280 snapshots (and about 10 additional small contact proofs) of motorcycles, motorcycle racing, and midget car racing. Various sizes, mostly a variation on 4.25" x 3", with some both smaller and larger; both black and white and color. A good percentage are captioned on the rear with places and some name, and many have either handwritten or stamped dates. Most are dated between 1958-1963, a few with later dates (the latest in 1973). The photos are centered around the business and motorcycle racing career of Ed LaBelle (1928-2010) who owned a motorcycle shop, Ed LaBelle Cycle Sales, in Philadelphia. Born in Landsdowne, Pennsylvania, and after service in WWII, he was a professional motorcycle racer, the three-time winner of the Canadian national championship, and held a world record in England, while simultaneously designing, customizing, and selling bikes. Most of the images show bike races and rallies including several identified in Canada, Laconia, Daytona, the Langhorne Scramble, and Atsion, New Jersey, sometimes with details of the bikes, the other riders, and how LaBelle fared in the race. A very few seem like they might have been taken in England or Europe. The images are unusually focused on bikes and racing, and except for a modest amount of images of midget race cars and contemporary sports cars, which LaBelle also apparently raced and designed, are almost entirely devoted to bikers and bike racing. A wonderfully chronology and subject specific accumulation of images.
