De La Rive's (1801-73) only book, aside from separately published memoirs, is the present comprehensive treatise on electricity, the largest such work of its day and "for a long period, the only systematic practical treatise on the subject." (Wheeler Gift Cat. 1251 - the English translation, the original French not in Wheeler). The practical applications of electricity included telegraph, motors, clocks, light, and heat, as well as, applications to physiology and chemistry. De La Rive ".was known as the friend of Ampére, Arago, and especially Faraday, with whom he maintained an extensive correspondence, and as the most dogged defender of the purely chemical theory of the pile. 3 S., 8°. [An den österr. Chemiker u. Mineralogen Anton Schrötter von Kristelli (1802-1875)]. - De la Rive wurde 1823 Professor an der Akademie in Genf. Seine experimentellen Untersuchungen bezogen sich auf die Elektrizität und den Magnetismus. Durch seine Erfindung, Silber und Kupfer in galvanischen Bädern zu vergolden, legte er den Grund zur weiteren Entwicklung der Galvanoplastik. 1841 erhielt er für seine Erfindung von der französischen Akademie der Wissenschaften einen Preis von 3000 Franken. Er lieferte auch Untersuchungen zu Problemen der Thermodynamik und der Wellenoptik. Mit François Marcet untersuchte er die Spezifische Wärmekapazität von Gasen und machte Beobachtungen zur Bestimmung der Temperatur der Erdkruste. Er machte Studien zur Theorie der Voltaischen Zelle und zur elektrischen Entladung in verdünnten Gasen, was ihn zu einer Theorie zur Aurora Borealis führte [.]. 1859 wurde er zum auswärtigen Mitglied der Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften gewählt. 1862 gründete er in Genf gemeinsam mit Marc Thury die Société pour la construction d'instruments de physique (SIP) zur Herstellung wissenschaftlicher Instrumente. Die Universität Oxford wollte ihm 1873 die Ehrendoktorwürde verleihen. Auf dem Weg dorthin verstarb er plötzlich bei Marseille (Wikipedia). --- Der in Olmütz geborene Anton Schrötter, Sohn eines Apothekers, studierte ab 1822 zunächst auf Wunsch seines Vaters in Wien Medizin, wechselte dann aber unter dem Einfluss von Friedrich Mohs zu den naturwissenschaftlichen Fächern, speziell der Mineralogie. 1827 erhielt er eine Assistentenstelle für Physik und Mathematik an der Universität Wien. 1830 wurde er Professor für Physik und Chemie am Technischen Institut Joanneum in Graz. Während eines halbjährigen Urlaubs im Jahre 1838 besuchte er chemische Institute in Göttingen, Heidelberg, Frankfurt und Paris. In Gießen machte er sich bei Justus von Liebig mit der organischen Elementaranalyse vertraut. Ab 1843 arbeitete er als Professor für technische Chemie am Polytechnischen Institut der Universität Wien und übernahm dort 1845 die Professur für allgemeine Chemie. Schrötter war neben Baumgartner, Ettingshausen und Haidinger einer der Begründer der Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften in Wien und wurde 1850 ihr Generalsekretär. Die Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina wählte Schrötter 1856 zu ihrem Mitglied. Ab 1868 leitete er das österreichische Hauptmünzamt und wurde gleichzeitig zum Ministerialrat ernannt. Er wurde 1874 in den Ruhestand versetzt und eröffnete in seiner Wohnung ein Privatlaboratorium, in dem er Studien über Edelmetalle betrieb. 1875 starb er in Wien. Schrötter hat in seinem Leben ca. 60 wissenschaftliche Publikationen verfasst. Ab 1845 beschäftigte Schrötter sich intensiv mit Phosphor. 1848 gelang ihm der Nachweis der schon von Berzelius geäußerten Vermutung, dass roter Phosphor eine allotrope Modifikation des weißen Phosphors, nicht aber eine Phosphorverbindung ist. Schrötter wandelte weißen Phosphor durch Erhitzen in roten um, den man zeitweise Schrötterschen Phosphor nannte. Sein Verfahren zur Darstellung desselben revolutionierte die Streichholzindustrie, wo roter Phosphor schon bald als Bestandteil der Reibflächen genutzt wurde. Er war ein Organisator in Industrie und Wissenschaft sowie Berater bei den Vorbereitungen zur Novara-Expedition und zur Österreich-Ungarischen Nordpolexpedition.
