Parmi les 45 versions du Mémoire qui existent dans les…bibliothèques françaises et allemandes, Roland Oberlé a choisi une copie de 1779, due à Philippe-Xavier Horrer, bailli de Wasselonne, enrichie par lui de plus de 500 notes. Il donne également une biographie de l'auteur du Mémoire, l'intendant Jacques de La Grange, un homme de Louvois, en poste en Alsace de 1673 à 1698, et qui fut, malgré des faiblesses et des négligences qui provoquèrent son rappel, le vrai conquérant civil de la province. Le Mémoire décrit la géographie du pays, sa situation ecclésiastique dans le monde catholique, l'état militaire, la situation politique (particulièrement compliquée, malgré les efforts de l'Administration française), les ressources du pays «trop chargé par toutes les impositions qui excèdent la force et la juste portée de cette petite province » ; enfin, il dresse un inventaire des grandes familles nobles avec leurs fiefs terriens et autres (comme la taxe sur les joueurs de violon appartenant au prince de Birckenfeld), et fournit 26 notices de ville. Revient comme un leitmotiv le thème de la guerre qui a ruiné agriculture et industrie. Mais le pays est fertile, le vin y est bon, les habitants sont joyeux, dociles et pacifiques ; et on peut espérer qu'ils parleront bientôt tous français? Nombreuses reproductions en noir. Bon exemplaire. 1975.

The engravings were printed under the personal supervision of the artist. From Wikipedia: "A clipper was a very fast sailing ship of the middle third of the 19th century. They were fast, yachtlike vessels, with three masts and a square rig. They were generally narrow for their length, could carry limited bulk freight, small by later 19th century standards, and had a large total sail area. Clipper ships were mostly constructed in British and American shipyards, though France, Brazil, the Netherlands and other nations also produced some. Clippers sailed all over the world, primarily on the trade routes between the United Kingdom and its colonies in the east, in trans-Atlantic trade, and the New York-to-San Francisco route round Cape Horn during the California Gold Rush. Dutch clippers were built beginning in the 1850s for the tea trade and passenger service to Java. The boom years of the clipper ship era began in 1843 as a result of the growing demand for a more rapid delivery of tea from China. It continued under the stimulating influence of the discovery of gold in California and Australia in 1848 and 1851, and ended with the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869." Translated from the French Wikipedia: "Jacques Lagrange ( born in Paris July 28, 1917, died in July 1995) was a French painter belonging to the New School of Paris. In 1937 he participated with Dufy decoration flag of the International Electricity Exhibition in Paris. Mobilized in Angers, he discovers the " Tapestry of the Apocalypse." Released and demobilized in 1944, Lagrange joined his workshop Arcueil. Guests at the first Salon de Mai in 1945, there then participates every year and exhibited at the Galerie de France Myriam Prevot and Gildo Caputo in 1946 and 1953. Completing a project old he went to Aubusson and performs in direct contact with artisans his first tapestry. His paintings are from 1955 regularly presented by the Villand Galanis and Gallery, with those of Chastel, Esteve Lapicque. Jacques Lagrange co-wrote Monsieur Hulot 's Holiday (1953), Uncle (1958) Playtime (1967), Traffic (1971) and Parade (1974 ) by Jacques Tati he met in 1945 and with whom he will not cease until his death in 1982 to work as artistic adviser. It also works with Jean Vilar in 1958 creating the sets and costumes for the NPT Ubu. Lagrange made ? ? several achievements included the monumental works of architect Edward Albert, a ceiling of 600 m2 for Croulebarbe Tower or Tour Albert ( 1957-1959 ), the first skyscraper in Paris, and a marble pavement ( 1967-1972 ) for the faculty of Jussieu including Jean Lescure provides epigraphy ( Einstein formula to Baudelaire sentence Gaston Bachelard ). Creator of many tapestry, Lagrange is a professor at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. From 1967 to 1992 he lived in the village of Saint-Martial-le-Mont in the department of Creuse." Cet important document fournit sur cette province à l'époque de Louis XIV un tableau des plus complets. Géographie, état écclésiastique, collégiales, commanderies, gouvernement militaire, justices, compagnies, tribus, finance, commerce, eaux minérales, mines, manufactures, villes, (Colmar, Brisack, Fribourg, Belfort, Huninghen, Sélestat, Ensisheim, Ribeauvillé, Rapoltsweiller, Guebwiller, Soultz, Kaysersberg, Rouffach, Thann, Obernheim, Rosheim, Molsheim, Saverne, Haguenau, Fort Louis, Weissembourg, Landau, Anwiller, Philisbourg), châteaux (Landskron, Lichtemberg).
