The text in blue ink, in a clear hand, on the rectos of Chambre de De?pute?s stationery comprising 30 other unpublished ?Gaillardes' . Marseille, [Paris], A L'Enseigne Des Trois Cagoles, [Maurice Duflou] n.d., 1938. £2,500.00 Book block split, contents loosening (from the stuffed in manuscript material), glacine a bit worn with some loss on head of spine. Dutel 1712, Pia 649, Rose 2211. Rare, the only other good association copy, but without manuscript material, known to us is one signed on the title and cover in the BnF described in Pia. Provenance: Perceau's copy marked-up with ? x 's sporadically in pencil in the margins. This with the holograph title on spine, and the collection of unpublished manuscript stories around female sexuality that are included, suggests new research and rejigging for a new edition (or for the sheer joy of collecting/writing smut). Formerly in the collection of Jean-Pierre Faur. Illustrated with coarse and salty illustrations of largely domestic and very explicit sexual scenes, signed in the stone by ?Pol' (Luc Lafnet). The very decorations of the book are laced with sex- ual profanity the jacket and title illustrations depict the same scene of a Priapeia, taken from Rops, with a gaggle of naked women (but for stockings) clambering over a large tumescent penis, or kneeling in supplication under the testes. Perceau worked closely with Maurice Duflou on other clandestine publications but apparently only this one under the sign of the 'Trois Cagoles' or ?three tarts' in English. Perceau is a giant in erotic publishing and bibliography, and, along with Guillaume Apollinaire and Fernand Fleuret, produced ?L'Enfer De La Bibliothe?que Nationale' , the first systematic bibliography of the banishment section forerotica in the French National Library (equivalent perhaps to Kearney's ?private case' in the British Library but far more extensive). His biographer described him as living several ?breathless lives' as clandestine poet, bibliographer (of course), historian of secret archives but also libertine singer, journo politico, pagan folklorist, anthologiser of the salacious, autodidactic pedagogue, public meeting warm-up man, and hardened lecher (Vincent Labaume ? Louis Perceau, le polygraphe, 2005). He wrote under a number of pseudonyms and noms a? clef , here as ?Un Journaliste' , but else- where as Dr Ludovico Hernandez for a work on sodomy trials (p-7 Jim Chevallier ? The Old RegimePoliceBlotterII:Sodomites,Tribadsand'CrimesAgainstNature',201 0),asJacquesOncial for his first publication (a book of contrepe?teries ) and ? Helpey, bibliographe poitevin' publishing collec- tions of his own poetry under the name ?Aexandre de Verineau' . There were other names too. Most important of all, he published the magisterial Bibliographie du Roman E?rotique au XIXe sie?cle in 1930 which remains in use to this day (not least by this cataloguer). This copy is well known to the eroto-cognoscenti, the bawdy/lusty or lewd jokes on Chambre Des De?pute?s stationery delighted Labaume who noted that Perceau accompanied Pierre Renaudel, con- servative Socialist politician, and editor of L'Humanite? , to the legislative assembly of France's Par- liament on many occasions( ibid p-226). Here amidst the drone of ?serious' political discussion and grand formal receptions and banquets that he stalked, Perceau recorded and laid out thes.
