Hardcover. Zustand: g+ to near fine. Reprint. Folio. (9) 213 (1)pp., 170 plates. Original red cloth with gilt lettering and illustration on spine, in illustrated dustjacket, black lettering on spine. Burgundy endpapers. Color frontispiece. "Affectionately known by everyone in any way connected with Japanese art as the "Red Cross" Catalogue, this was an astonishing book to appear in 1915 at the height of the war, conceived and executed as it was with the sort of lavish unconcern for time and cost that had been squandered on, say, the huge Tomkinson Catalogue in happier times. But the exhibition that gave rise to it, though intended as a fund-raising exploit, was both imaginative and purposeful, and deserved a catalogue that was more than a simple list of exhibits." (Publisher). Exceptional collection of color and b/w reproductions of Japanese art and handicraft with list of contributors and descriptive catalog. Dustjacket with light wear, binding with light wear along edges, some age-toning of block not affecting imagery. Brief inscription in upper right corner of front free endpaper. DJ, binding and interior in overall good+ to very good condition. Color plates near fine.…

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Good. No Jacket. English text.; Hardcover (without dust jacket - as issued, in slipcase).; 25 x 33 cm.; 1.8 kg.; 12 pages with introduction, list of plates, errata and index to names, followed by catalogue with 128 pages (black and white illustrations). Includes ADDENDUM at the end with the realised prices in the sale of the TROWER collection.; This is a facsimile copy of the original sale catalogue published in 1913 by Glendining & Co. Ltd, Fine Art Auctioneers, London, March 31 to April 7.; LIMITED EDITION OF 1,000 COPIES OF WHICH THIS IS NUMBER 203.; Used with signs of wear on the exterior and interior. The slipcase in worn, shows edge wear (tiny chips), scuffs and scratches. The hardcover shows signs of wear, the edges are slightly bumped and turning inwards. Interior with minor signs of wear. Good condition overall.; "The name of the late Harry Seymour Trower is too well known to all interested in Japanese Art for this collection to require more than a few words of introduction. Mr. Trower was a man of incredible activity and extensive knowledge, speaking French as a native, equally at home with German works, deeply interested in social studies, and more so in the development of British sea power he was Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Navy League, from 1896 till 1909; he put into all his work a whole-hearted thoroughness only to be compared with the geniality of his friendship. One of the earliest and most earnest of English collectors, he began to gather netsuke as far back as October 1876, and his last purchases date from June 1910. During thirty-four years, netsuke, okimono, swords, lacquer and sword furniture claimed his leisure and study, for he left no page unturned, no book unread, to discover the meaning of, and to elucidate the allusions hidden in those tiny masterpieces, the delicate work of which he loved so well. Considerable as was his knowledge of the subject, and however diligent his study, he refrained from publishing except in the case of early articles, but he put unreservedly at the disposal of other students the material gathered and carefully indexed in his note-books. He was a member of the Royal Asiatic Society of Japan, and for several years a member of Council of the Japan Society, London. To him the present writer owes the communication of many notes, as recorded elsewhere: others can acknowledge a similar debt. It was characteristic of his good nature that he was still willing to lend his treasures, even after he had been charged a round sum for the reproduction in a German book of specimens benevolently sent on loan to Berlin. With his death, deeply mourned by all who were privileged to look upon him as a friend, the meagre ranks of Japanese collectors in this country have lost a leader of catholic and eclectic tastes, who collected to please himself chiefly fine or pretty work, and interesting or rare subjects, without listening to the dogmatic worshippers of the antique. It was his desire that his collection should be, whether dispersed or disposed of en bloc, a source of pleasure to others, to those who, like himself, enjoy the handling of a netsuke, the discovery of tiny details lovingly finished by the craftsman, admire the subtle beauties of lacquer, or seek in metal work that purity of design, that grace and strength of workmanship which place Japanese sword furniture in a class apart; hence, with the exception of a few pieces, the collection is now to be dispersed. It was also his wish, expressed in a letter to his Executors in 1906, that the present writer should edit his Catalogue; the publication of a large descriptive and didactic work as originally contemplated was, however, impossible, but an attempt has been made at giving within the compass of this extra-illustrated sale catalogue a representative memento of the Collection." introduction by H. L. Joly.…

Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Dust Jacket Included. English text.; Hardcover (cloth with dust jacket).; 23 x 29 cm; 3 kg; 623 pages 16 plates in full colour and 500 in black and white. ; Reprint of 1908 edition. 4th printing.; Used with signs of wear on the exterior and interior. The dust jackets show edge wear, wear marks, scuffs and scratches on the front cover, spine and back cover. Small tear at the bottom right side of the front cover. The spine shows wear marks at the top and bottom. Interior with pen written dedication on 2nd page. Remaining interior in very good condition with minor signs of wear.; This book - a reprint of a 1908 volume - is a valuable reference for anyone who delves in the collection of Japanese objets d'art. In it are descriptions of more than a thousand historical episodes, legendary characters, folk lore, myths, and religious symbolism to be found in the prints, masks, figurines, and other artifacts of Japan. With more than 700 illustrations, including 16 full color reproductions, Legends in Japanese Art is a carefully organized and catalogued presentation that will bring added appreciation to one's collection, whatever it might consist of. It explains in an extensive account all the mysteries of the kitsune, or fox, one of the magical creatures abounding in the folk lore of the country. A special indexing method by prominent features or attributes of a specimen help facilitate research if the specific name of an object is not know. There is also a special index which allows the non-Japanese reading individual to locate the English translation of the kanji, or Chinese characters. Admittedly, this book, while comprehensive, is far from being complete. Indeed, as author Henri L. Joly says, "The number of subjects is so large that no collection can be found covering the whole field in an altogether satisfactory manner; it is, in fact, questionable whether such a collection could now be made.". Beginning with the author's own interest and collection, this voluminous end result was made possible by the cooperation of the author's friends and fellow collectors. Joly felt that it was "imperative lavishly to illustrate from actual specimens, carefully selected from amongst the best, the stories concisely told in this dictionary and thus to supply pictorial information not hitherto available.".…
