Stiff gold pictorial wrappers with chromolithographic design of an ascending angel, amidst violets and lilies of the valley, both covers decorated with a silk fringe border, bound with braided silk cord as issued, all edges gilt. Laid into publisher's printed folder with title stamped in gilt on front cover. A fine, bright copy, with striking pictorial graphics, the outside folder is a little rubbed. The illustrator, Lizbeth Bullock Humphrey, illustrated a number of popular books, including children's poetry, and the first American edition of Tennyson's *The Song of the Brook.* She also won Louis Prang prizes for her Christmas card designs.

A handsome Sammelband containing 3 important horticultural works of the late baroque period. I: The gardener Hesse (fl. 1700), after much travelling, worked for the Count of Nassau and others. The editor of the Garten-Lust, a certain Phytologus whose identity is not known, also edited Hesse's Teutscher Gärtner. The present work is divided into 4 parts: the first deals principally with the laying out and cultivation of the garden; the second part contains descriptions of ornamental plants, vegetables and herbs; the third part instructs on tree-planting and nurseries; & the fourth part (pp372-389) discusses a pharmaceutical garden. Güntz III, 26. See Seguier, p370 (edition of 1696). II: A supplement to the above work dealing specifically with the flower-garden. The identities of its French author and of the translator are both unknown. The preface is dated 1705, and the treatise gives detailed descriptions and lengthy lists of varieties of so-called 'florists flowers' contemporarily available, particularly anemones, carnations and tulips; they are variously classified for useful reference - according to colour, shape and size of bloom and leaf. See Seguier, p370 (edition of 1705). III: First German edition. Liger (1658-1717) is known for his many useful agricultural and garden books which ran to several editions. Apart from selective descriptions of flowers and their treatment, the work contains several sections on the art of garden design. The 'Nützlichen Garten Gespräche' (Useful conversations about gardening) on pp583-764 are a translation of the 'Jardinier Solitaire' by F. Gentil. Fromm 15270.
