In den WarenkorbCouverture rigide. Zustand: Bon. [DE LA FEUILLE (Daniel)]. Science Hiéroglyphique, The Hague, Jean Swart, 1746. In-4°, half-leather bound. A Masterpiece of the emblem book followed by a series of historical and biographical emblems on Mary II of England. A fascinating collection of esoteric pictures in a small quarto size (20 x 16 cm) illustrated with 45 plates, which are 36 plates showing 15 medallions, and 9 plates decorated with 4 medallions each. In the first part, the thumbnails are in the form of medallions adorned with allegorical figures and occult. Each emblem is accompanied by a definition that begins with a quatrain verse. Then the author gives a detailed description of the figure explaining the symbolic significance of each of its attributes, providing a real initiatory treatise on the universe of symbols. The second part illustrated with emblems the life and death of Mary II "Queen of England of Glorious Memory" (from page 117 to page 128). Our copy is bound in half leather with rising spines and gilt on the back, t., 1 f. (Warn.), 128 pp., 45 pl., 4 ff. (Tables). Binding id slightly rubbed, corners bumped, three small pieces of leather lacking on hinges, lack of paper in corner p.57 (without damage to the text, probably original), tear without loss to a leaf of the table, good condition for a collection that remains uncommon. The book comes from the library of Beauharnais dynasty, attested by a magnificent engraved bookplate by Norbert Heÿbrouck (1700-1762), writer of his majesty, on reverse side of front cover. Daniel La Feuille (1640-1709) was born in Sedan and learned how to be a watchmaker. In 1683, De La Feuille and his family went to settle in Amsterdam to escape the repression against the Huguenots. He then worked as a writer and seller of prints and entered in 1691 in the guild of booksellers. His masterpiece (Currencies and emblems, 1691) dates from this time. The majority of symbols in this book had the shape and size of a watch which made them particularly useful for artisans and watchmakers. Praz and Landwehr established the origin of this profusion of symbols on the "Idea de un politico Christiano" by Saavedra Fajardo (1655) while Groult sees a kinship with the Iconology of Baudoin and Jacques de Bie (1643); the drafters of the Emblem Project Utrecht find some similarities with Alciat. (Landwehr, 440; Praz, 393).…

In den WarenkorbCouverture rigide. Zustand: Bon. (Landwehr, 440 ; Praz, 393).…

In den WarenkorbAn early edition, published within the engraver's lifetime. The maps of Europe are surrounded by vignettes of prominent fortifications - useful information for military planners during the turbulent 18th century. There are also maps of the five continents, with California as an island, and a plate showing defensive machinery. Only two copies of this edition are listed on WorldCat. Daniel de la Feuille's (1640-1709) work opens with a map of the world, identifying New Holland. This is followed by a plan of defensive technology, including star fortresses, the newly invented mortar, various ships, obstacles such as the cheval de frise, and types of cannon shell. The regional maps cover Hungary, Romania, Germany, Livonia, France, Britain, Italy, and the Iberian Peninsula. Vignettes of many prominent cities surround each one, for example, the map of Andalusia shows the fortifications of Cordoba, Malaga, Granada, and Gibraltar. La Feuille was a French Huguenot who spent his early career as a watchmaker. In 1683 he was forced to flee to Amsterdam, establishing himself as an engraver and publisher. After his death, his sons Jacob and Paul continued to update and reissue his plates. In the case of Les Tablettes Guerrieres, they continued to release the book until 1729. This copy is the third edition, following the first of 1706. The introductory pages include a table of longitudes and latitudes, an index (listing 31 maps), and 102 articles of military ordinances. As buyers would make up their own atlases, each copy contains a different number of maps. The copy held by Wake Forest University has 31, the copy held by the University of Michigan has 34. The index matches the plates in this copy with three exceptions: the maps of Sweden and Denmark are not present and there is an additional map of Scotland. McLaughlin 147; Shirley G.FEU-1a (for 1707 edition). Tall narrow octavo (197 x 75 mm), pp. 15, 16. With 29 folding engraved maps, folding engraved plate, woodcut vignette on title page; title page printed in red and black, text in French. Contemporary speckled sheep, raised bands, compartments decorated with foliate lozenge centre tool and corner-pieces in gilt, broad gilt palmette roll panel, board edges rolled with gilt foliate pattern, marbled pastedowns, edges stained red. Contemporary manuscript numbers on verso of maps. Binding rubbed, spine head bumped, a few shallow wormholes on boards, maps a little browned, folds reinforced with Japanese tissue: a very good copy.…
